BUILDER WANTS TO SAVE 2 PEPPER TREES.

NORTHRIDGE - A builder Friday proposed saving two of the four mature pepper trees on Zelzah Avenue that the city Planning city planning, process of planning for the improvement of urban centers in order to provide healthy and safe living conditions, efficient transport and communication, adequate public facilities, and aesthetic surroundings.  Commission has ordered torn down.

The four pepper trees are across the street from California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. The university has over 150,000 alumni. It's also home to a summer musical theater/theater program known as TADW (TeenAge Drama Workshop) that leads teenagers through an , on the corner of Halsted Street Halsted Street is a major north-south street in the American city of Chicago, Illinois. In Chicago's grid system, Halsted street marks 800 West, one mile west of State Street, from Grace Street (3800 N) in Lakeview south to the city limits at the Little Calumet
, where Los Angeles- based Korda Homes plans to build a 42-unit apartment complex.

They were ordered cut down after the city Planning Commission required the developer to widen both Zelzah Avenue and Halsted Street to accommodate extra traffic generated by the building. Korda Homes builder Bob Van Dyke Van Dyke (or van/Van Dijk or Dyk etc) is a surname of Dutch origin. It refers to:
  • Sir Anthony van Dyck, (1599 – 1641), Flemish-born painter who lived in England
  • Barry Van Dyke (born 1951), American actor, son of Dick Van Dyke
 said tree wells would save two of the trees on Zelzah Avenue. They would extend into the parking areas of the street and take up two parking spaces.

A tree well is an opening in the sidewalk to expose the dirt in the base of the tree, allowing the roots to survive.

At their next meeting, commission members are expected to consider what type of liability the city would have if the trees are allowed to remain, said Jim Gibson, the Public Works public works
