BUICK INVITATIONAL NOTEBOOK: WOODS QUIETLY NEAR TOP.

Byline: JILL PAINTER Staff writer

fatherhood. He's playing in his first tournament of the season and has taken a back seat to rookie Brandt Snedeker Brandt Snedeker (born December 8, 1980) is an American professional golfer who plays on the PGA Tour.

Snedeker was born in Nashville, Tennessee. He attended Montgomery Bell Academy and then Vanderbilt University, where he was a Kappa Alpha, and won the U.S.
, who has led every round.

Woods shot a 3-under 69 on Saturday and is just two shots behind co-leaders Snedeker and Andrew Buckle.

``It's nice to be in contention the first week out,'' Woods said. ``That's why I prepared as hard as I did to put myself in this spot, and hopefully (today) I can stay out of the bunkers a little bit and make a few putts. Again, also staying bogey-free would be nice.''

Woods has an unbelievable resume compared with the trio that's playing in the final group. Rookies Buckle and Snedeker have never won on the PGA Tour. Sutherland has won a match-play event but never a stroke-play event.

Woods has 54 victories. That's 41 more wins than Snedeker has starts on the PGA Tour.

``Those guys are insane,'' Snedeker said. ``They look like they are going to fly in the trees the whole time. I had more fun watching them today than I did watching myself play golf.''

Longtime love: Bob Steber has been a volunteer course marshal at the Buick Invitational since 1968 and has walked with many of the greats.

I've walked with Bob Hope, President Ford, Sam Snead -- all the big names,'' Steber said. ``I call it a walk in the park.''

Local: Charlie Wi (Westlake High) shot a 1-over 73 and is tied for eighth, three shots behind the leaders.
