BUICK'S 5-MILLIONTH LESABRE TO BE PRESENTED TO BUICK CITY EMPLOYEE

FLINT, Mich., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Buick rolled out its 5-millionth LeSabre Thursday (March 25) at the historic Buick City Assembly Center, using the occasion to help celebrate the automaker's 90th anniversary and its pride in Buick City employees.
The milestone six-passenger sedan will be presented to a factory employee, chosen by drawing, after it serves as pace car this summer for the Great American Race, bills as the world's greatest antique car rally.
LeSabre -- built only at Buick City -- was the No. 1-selling full- size car in the industry last year, with sales up 24 percent from the previous year. Several months ago, LeSabre was named Family Circle "Domestic Family Car of the Year."
Buick City is a state-of-the-art plant created in 1985 virtually on the foundation of Buick's original home plant. Of 31.6 million Buicks built in nearly 90 years, almost 15 million of them have been built at that site in Buick's home town of Flint.
While LeSabre today is built only at Buick City, it has been produced in the past in a number of factories across the United States. Of the 5 million LeSabres, about 2.4 million have been built in Flint.
LeSabres were first built in August of 1958 for the 1959 model year. The 5-millionth is one of the recently announced 90th Anniversary LeSabres -- specially equipped, specially priced ($18,999) LeSabre Customs.
But the champagne beige milestone LeSabre is not for sale.
"It's appropriate that this 5-millionth LeSabre be presented to an employee of Buick City," said Buick General Manager Edward H. Mertz. "This was Buick's original home plant. Much more recently, Buick and the Buick City team made LeSabre No. 1 in U.S. quality according to J.D. Power surveys -- which helped enormously in building Buick's reputation as the new symbol of quality in America. So we're very proud of the employees here."
As pace car for the Great American Race, the milestone LeSabre will also be a reminder as it crosses the country that this is Buick's 90th anniversary year, Mertz said.
The Great Race will start June 27 in Huntington Beach, Calif., and end July 10 in Norfolk, Va. One of its overnight stops will be in Flint July 6.
Joining Buick City employees and Mertz at Thursday's ceremony were Flint Mayor Woodrow Stanley, Donald E. Hackworth, general manager of the Cadillac/Luxury Car Engineering and Manufacturing Division who is a former Buick general manager, Buick City Plant Manager Tim Lee and representatives of UAW Local 599. Tom McRae, executive director of the Texas-based Great Race, attended to affix the race's pace-car emblems to the milestone LeSabre.
The ceremony is one of a number of events commemorating Buick's 90th anniversary during 1993. Although David Dunbar Buick's early companies had begun building experimental cars in 1899 or 1900, Buick Motor Division dates its formal beginning to 1903. Buick Motor Co. was incorporated in Detroit in May of 1903 and was moved to Flint in the fall of that year. It began production in Flint with the Model B the following summer and produced 37 cars in 1904. The manufacturing complex where Buick City now stands was built in 1906.
By 1908, Buick claimed to be the country's largest producer. On the basis of Buick's success, its leader, William C. Durant, created General Motors in September of 1908.
