BUFFALO AND DALLAS MAYORS ENLIST FRITO-LAY IN HIGH STAKES SUPER BOWL WAGER; THE REAL CHIPS ARE CALLED IN FOR GENTLEMEN'S BET

DALLAS, Jan. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Frito-Lay, Inc. today raised the ante in a high stakes bet between the Mayors of Buffalo and Dallas by contributing 50 cases of Fritos Corn Chips and the company's new "chip of the 90's," Doritos Tortilla Thins, which are currently available only in several U.S. test markets.
Recently, Dallas Mayor Steve Bartlett, who made similar wagers during the NFL playoff games with the Mayors of Philadelphia and San Francisco, placed a friendly bet with Buffalo Mayor James Griffin on the outcome of this Sunday's Super Bowl match-up between the Dallas Cowboys and the Buffalo Bills.
Originally at stake for Buffalo: a case of cereal, some non-dairy products and a crate of hand lotion. Dallas initially put up 50 pounds of fajita meat, 10 gallons of chili, five gallons of hot sauce and two cases of barbecue sauce, 10 pecan pies and 14 cases of soda and beer.
Reacting to the Dallas offer, Mayor Griffin expressed dissatisfaction with the terms and announced what he really wanted was Fritos from Dallas-based Frito-Lay, Inc.
Frito-Lay employees at the company's Dallas and upstate New York (Kirkwood) chip plants immediately offered to not only provide the additional Fritos pay-off, but to raise the stakes even higher by including the limited availability Doritos Tortilla Thins. They also insisted on extending the terms to both sides.
If Buffalo wins, the Dallas plant will deliver the chips and a congratulatory note on behalf of Frito-Lay's Texas employees to Mayor Griffin and the City of Buffalo; if Dallas wins, the Kirkwood, N.Y. employees will deliver the chips and a congratulatory note on behalf of Frito-Lay's New York employees and Mayor Griffin to Mayor Bartlett and the City of Dallas.
"As if there wasn't enough pressure on the Cowboys and Bills already...," said Tod MacKenzie, Frito-Lay vice president of public affairs. "We're hopeful this late-breaking development won't totally distract them from their gameplans."
