BUENA EDGES C.V. : BUENA 59, C.V. 55.

On one side stood Buena High School Buena High School can refer to:

, one of the proudest girls' basketball programs in the country, a team that has won five Southern Section Division I-A titles and two state championships.

On the other stood Crescenta Valley's Michelle Greco, who in her prep career has built considerable mystique of her own.

One player against a dynasty normally would be a mismatch mismatch

. But Greco is not just any player, as she showed again Friday night at the Long Beach Pyramid.

However, her 34 points, nine rebounds and overall dominance weren't enough.

Buena, the defending division champion, barely outlasted Greco's traveling basketball clinic Noun 1. basketball clinic - a meeting at which basketball players receive special evaluation and instruction

and claimed its sixth crown with a 59-55 victory over the Falcons.

The Falcons' all-everything guard almost single-handedly brought them back from a 14-point third-quarter deficit, and scored 12 points in the final quarter. Her layup in traffic and ensuing en·sue

``I knew I had to take the game over,'' said Greco, who scored 168 points in five playoff games Noun 1. playoff game - one game in the series of games constituting a playoff

``I wanted to win so badly, I wanted the game on my shoulders. I just didn't get it done at the end.''

It was the second straight year that the Falcons (28-3) have seen a dream season dashed by the Bulldogs (26-2).

Buena routed the Falcons 78-50 in last season's semifinals.

``We weren't afraid of this team,'' coach Marc Ward said. ``We were there at the end.''

Buena countered with an all-state player of its own in 6-foot-2 senior center Nicole Greathouse.

Despite picking up three first-half fouls, her aggressive inside play in the second half was a big difference.

Greathouse finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Stephanie Kinnear added 13 points and Kelly Murray and Renae Hofmann each scored 10.

It was Hofmann's two free throws with 41 seconds left that broke the 55-55 tie. Kinnear and Murray each added one foul shot in the waning seconds after the Falcons (28-3) were forced to foul. Tara Gregory, the Falcons' All-Pacific League point guard, sat out the second half because of a sprained ankle A sprained ankle, also known as a ankle sprain, ankle injury or ankle ligament injury, is a common medical condition where one or more of the ligaments of the ankle is torn or partially torn.  suffered last week.

``I'm extremely disappointed,'' Greco said. ``This is all I ever wanted. To let it slip away at the end is just the worst feeling.''

during a 78-50 semifinal loss to Buena that ended a 28-2 season.

Not this time.

Greco connected for 20 first-half points and Crescenta Valley at times took the game right to Greathouse.
