Sickened

Widower Jim has kept budgies for 60 years but the theft has left him ready to give up.

He said: "I'm sickened. I tend to those birds all day - it's like a full-time job.

"The thieves knew exactly what they were looking for. They actually lifted poorer quality birds out of the cages to leave them behind."

Great-grandad Jim, a former shoemaker, realised the birds had been stolen when he went to the shed on Saturday morning to prepare them for a show.

Four hens, four cocks, six chicks and six eggs were taken.

The stolen birds included a cobalt blue Budgie worth pounds 450 and a green and blue bird worth slightly less.

Police said: "It is suspected that the person or people responsible will have experience in keeping these birds."
