BUD GREENSPAN'S 'BARCELONA '92: 16 DAYS OF GLORY' TO PREMIERE IN AUGUST ON THE DISNEY CHANNEL

BURBANK, Calif., June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- "Barcelona '92: 16 Days of Glory," Bud Greenspan's two-hour documentary about the remarkable athletes who made the 1992 Olympic Games so memorable, will make its world premiere on The Disney Channel on Sunday, Aug. 15 at 9 p.m. (ET/PT).
This marks the fourth occasion The Disney Channel has teamed up with Greenspan to bring the magic of the Olympics to television.
Greenspan, the world renowned filmmaker who has captured the drama and the glory of the Olympic Games for more than 40 years, also produced "16 Days of Glory" on the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary, Canada, and the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea, all of which aired on The Disney Channel.
"We are very fortunate and pleased to continue our association with Bud," said Bruce Rider, senior vice president of programming at The Disney Channel. "Our trademark is quality programming the entire family can enjoy. `16 Days of Glory' epitomizes those qualities in a very dramatic and uplifting fashion."
"Barcelona '92" is an emotional and revealing look at a select group of individuals who participated in the world's greatest spectacle of sport. During the six months after the Games ended, Greenspan and his crew traveled the world to speak with several of the athletes who, through their enormous heart and determination, left a lasting impression on the world's stage. Each of the athletes looks back at the Barcelona Games and recounts, in poignant detail, their Olympic experience and how it affected their lives. Accompanied by an original score of music, "Barcelona '92" is a 10-story symphony of beauty, grace, honor, and pride.
Featured in the film are track and field competitors Evelyn Ashford of the United States, Derek Redmond of Great Britain, Derartu Tulu of Ethiopia, Elana Meyer of South Africa, and Khalid Skah of Morocco; swimmer Pablo Morales of the United States; rowers Silken Laumann of Canada and the Searle Brothers of Great Britain; gymnast Trent Dimas of the United States; judo competitor Yael Arad of Israel; and cyclist Erika Salumae of Estonia.
"We tell the stories of some outstanding people who personify the Olympic spirit," said Greenspan. "There's Canada's Silken Laumann, who suffered a serious leg injury in a rowing competition just two months before the Olympics. Defying all odds, she made it to Barcelona and won a bronze medal in the single scull. Her story, so inspirational and heartwarming, typifies the beauty of the human spirit that we strive to capture in all the `16 Days Of Glory' films."
Other dramatic episodes include the triumph of Morales, the "old man of swimming," who came out of retirement to capture a gold medal after suffering past Olympic failures; the courage of Redmond, the British runner who injured his hamstring during a 400-meter race and was helped to the finish line by his father; the perseverance of 35-year-old Ashford, who won her fourth gold medal while competing in her final Olympics; and the pride of Arad, who won Israel's first ever Olympic medal and then publicly dedicated the medal to the memory of the Israeli athletes who were slain by terrorists at the 1972 Munich Olympics.
"Barcelona '92: 16 Days of Glory" is produced by Cappy Productions. It is written, produced, and directed by Greenspan, who also wrote and directed "The Olympiad," the Emmy-winning 22-part series. The executive producer and location director in Nancy Beffa.
