BUBB MAY BE AN INTERIM AD, BUT HE'S HANDS-ON.Byline: Kevin Acee Daily News Staff Writer There is Paul Bubb the public-address announcer. There is Paul Bubb firing the basketball coach. "Sweeping the gym floor, he probably would do that," said associate athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic Brian Swanson. No matter what people think of Bubb's eight months as interim athletic director at Cal State Northridge, there is no denying he has been hands-on. Detractors say Bubb has been too involved, is too young, has too big an ego. Proponents say he has fostered communication, has gotten the job done and has even mellowed mel·low adj. mel·low·er, mel·low·est 1. a. Kopita, to whom the athletic director reports, appointed Bubb, 39, as interim athletic director in July, replacing fired AD Bob Hiegert. Kopita told Bubb he could simply hold down the fort or he could take charge and act as if he were the permanent AD. "Clearly, he made the decision to be the athletic director and not just the gatekeeper In an H.323 IP telephony or video environment, a gatekeeper is a device that manages domains and provides call control. It is used to translate user names into IP addresses, to authenticate users and to manage network resources. ," said Kopita, who expects a recommendation from the search committee early next month. "We've got some really qualified candidates. Whether Paul ends up in the position or not, he has done a very good job under difficult conditions." Bubb's first 20 days on the job were spent studying the program's proposed move to the Big Sky Conference, readying the facilities and staff for that conference's visit and selling the move to the university's other department heads. By most accounts, he did well. The Big Sky accepted Northridge. Northridge accepted the Big Sky. Members of the University Budget Advisory Board were impressed. "That he got virtually unanimous support (from the board) for the move into the Big Sky says a lot," said Jerry Luedders, the chairman of the music department and a member of the board. "I have very much enjoyed working with him," said Louanne Kennedy, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs. "I understand more about athletics than I ever have." In the winter, Bubb engineered a budget that will evidently enable the school to add two sports over the next two years without eliminating any of its 19 current programs. He helped assemble a nonconference football schedule for next year that features Utah State and New Mexico New Mexico, state in the SW United States. At its northwestern corner are the so-called Four Corners, where Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah meet at right angles; New Mexico is also bordered by Oklahoma (NE), Texas (E, S), and Mexico (S). State. And most coaches questioned in past months have been pleased with what they perceive as Bubb's interest in and dedication to their programs. There are, not surprisingly, coaches who are not big Bubb fans. There are those who think he is too big on football, that he holds grudges and has a short fuse. Some exchanges with coaches have culminated in yelling. No coach would comment negatively about Bubb on the record. Both detractors and allies say there is no doubt Bubb pours his heart into the job. But some who favor his hiring say Bubb's "ego" has not been a problem - at least not as big a problem as they expected. That aside, improved communication - both within the athletic department and with other departments - is perhaps what makes Bubb most proud. He regularly attends and speaks up at department-head meetings. He calls staff meetings just to update coaches and he pens a weekly newsletter. "I think Paul has created an atmosphere (in the department) that we're not all out to get each other," football coach Dave Baldwin Dave Baldwin was the head football coach of San Jose State University from 1997-2000. During his tenure, he had three straight wins over Stanford (including their rosebowl season of 1999). In 1997, SJSU upset No. said. ". . . And I've seen what he's done on campus. I think the perception was athletics was on an island, and we're not anymore." Said Kopita: "He has made some real effort to bridge what I consider some pretty serious gaps both within and outside the (department)." But Bubb's lasting legacy, even with the successful move to the Big Sky occurring under his guidance, will likely be his firing last week of 25-year men's basketball coach Pete Cassidy. The March 13 announcement came as something of a surprise because Bubb said numerous times in the past month that the decision would not come until a permanent athletic director was named. He said he reversed field because it did not fit the style he had exhibited up to then. "I agreed to do a job back in July," Bubb said last week. "And to not fulfill that would have been a mistake. . . . That's not how I approached the whole year."
