BTi AND UNIVERSITY OF RENNES ESTABLISH DEVELOPMENT PROJECT
SAN DIEGO, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Biomagnetic Technologies Inc. (BTi) (NASDAQ: BTIX) and the University of Rennes in France announced today a joint project to further the development of clinical applications for a new medical imaging technique, magnetic source imaging (MSI). MSI is a combination of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) information. In order to further this development goal, BTi will establish a Laboratory for Industrial Research at the University of Rennes, which has purchased a Magnes(R) biomagnetometer system.
The University of Rennes and BTi collaborators will develop software to provide simultaneous viewing of MRI, MEG, stereotactic EEG and angiographic information as part of a multi-modality workstation concept. It is anticipated that this project will result in the further development of MSI as a surgical planning tool for patients with tumors and epilepsy. The Rennes group also will investigate the use of MSI to diagnose and plan treatment for patients with various neurological disorders, including stroke, head trauma and various dementias such as Alzheimers disease. Similar programs are already under way at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif., the Veteran's Administration Medical Center and University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M. and the University of Tokyo in Tokyo.
"We look forward to working closely with the fine medical and technical group in Rennes," said Stephen O. James, president and chief executive officer of BTi. "The Rennes group's expertise in the fields of stereotactic neurosurgery, neurology and image processing will certainly contribute to furthering the introduction of this important new diagnostic technology in the medical community."
BTi is the recognized leader in the development of biomagnetometers for medical applications. Its common stock is traded on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol BTIX.
