BT prices down 10pc.


BRITISH Telecom The telephone and communications carrier that provides services in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It used to be a division of the British Post Office, but was privatized in 1984 under Margaret Thatcher's administration.  cut the cost of some local calls by 10 per cent yesterday.

Phone users will pay 1.5p a minute - down from 1.7p - for an evening, Monday Monday: see week.  to Friday local call from April 29.

A five minute chat on the phone from 6pm to 8am will cost 7.5p.

Customers using BT Premier Line and Friends and Family discounts will pay 5.6p.

Saturday and Sunday Sunday: see Sabbath; week.  calls will still cost 1p a minute.

BT marketing chief Peter Conway said: "We are making a BT local call even more outstanding value."

He added: "Customers also enjoy great value for money because of the size of our local call areas.

"The average local call area covers almost 1,000 square miles A square mil is a unit of area, equal to the area of a square with sides of length one mil. A mil is one thousandth of an international inch. This unit of area is usually used in specifying the area of the cross section of a wire or cable. ."

BT claimed it had cut prices by pounds 2 billion since December 1993 - representing a 25 per cent drop in local call costs.
