MOBILE phones have forced BT to axe pre-paid phonecards after 21 years. Sales of the cards slumped from an annual high of pounds 74million in 1991 to pounds 7.2million last year. While 17million of the 587million calls from BT payphones in 2001 were made with phonecards, 73 per cent of the population now owns a mobile phone. Angus Porter, of BT's customer division, said: "Phonecards are now a loss making business." Cards for use in the UK and overseas will both be withdrawn from October.
