BT Selects Blue Coat for WAN Optimization and to Secure, Control and Accelerate Web Access.

ProxySG Appliances Manage Web Usage, Accelerate Content, Reduce Bandwidth Consumption and Protect Against Malware as BT Embraces More Open Use of the Web

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Blue Coat Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:BCSI), the leader in WAN Application Delivery and Secure Web Gateway, today announced that BT, one of the world's leading providers of communications solutions and services, has selected Blue Coat[R] ProxySG[R] appliances to manage its employees' Web usage, accelerate the delivery of content and applications, reduce bandwidth consumption and protect its corporate network against malware, such as spyware, viruses and other security threats.

Blue Coat appliances have allowed BT to increase its employees' Web access and have improved the performance of its Web-enabled applications, without compromising the security of BT's network. BT is planning to utilize ProxySG appliances to accelerate important business applications across BT's Wide Area Network (WAN), including a Web-based HR solution that now can be accessed in branch offices with nearly the same performance as in its headquarters. BT presently has deployed ProxySG appliances at its facilities in the UK, and is now planning to deploy the appliances in other locations throughout the world.

BT selected Blue Coat ProxySG appliances in conjunction with its adoption of a more open policy towards the use of Internet and Web applications by the company's more than 106,000 global employees. To enhance employee productivity and to secure its data and infrastructure, BT has applied comprehensive policy controls so that employees have access only to approved sites. BT estimates that its employees currently make 135 million requests to external Web sites on a daily basis, compared with 27 million a day just two years ago, an increase of 500 percent.

ProxySG appliances were selected by BT following an extensive assessment of those Secure Web Gateway products that combine both security and control. Blue Coat integrates granular levels of security and control in its appliances, so that rules can be enforced based on the specific user and the nature of the site, content or application. This permits certain employees or groups to access sites that were blocked, such as MySpace and Facebook. In addition, employees are permitted to access Web sites deemed potentially dangerous, since the appliances strip off attachments, prevent automatic downloads of executable software and scan Web pages for viruses or other malicious code. BT now allows its employees to access Webmail from its network, because it has the appliances scan for Web viruses.
