Raghubir Singh, senior superintendent of police, Samba sector, said gunner Sanjay Kumar and Shyam Lal, who was driving Tanwar's vehicle, sustained serious injuries. The terrorists, backed by Pakistani Rangers, first resorted to heavy firing at the border post around 2.30 am, apparently to divert the attention of the BSF soldiers so as to plant the IED on the Indian side.

BSF personnel retaliated to the firing but were unable to spot the terrorists who sneaked in and planted the IED. Tanwar was on his way to the border post around 9 am to inquire into the firing incident when the terrorists triggered the blast. The Bolero jeep Tanwar was travelling in was blown up, killing him on the spot.

Tanwar was posted as DIG in the Jammu frontier headquarters of the BSF and was given the charge of border posts 14 days ago.

The two injured BSF soldiers were first taken to the district hospital at Samba and later admitted to the government medical college at Jammu.

Search operations were immediately launched in the area as it was suspected that a group of terrorists might have infiltrated under the cover of firing. The state's director general of police Kuldeep Khoda and inspector general of police An Inspector General of Police (IGP) is a high ranking police officer of the Indian Police Service, Sri Lanka Police or Royal Malaysian Police (Polis Di-Raja Malaysia) cadre. BSF officers also reached the spot.

Army personnel were also engaged in the search operations. A few days ago, intelligence reports had suggested that a group of about 40 trained terrorists was waiting to infiltrate into India from Sialkot in Pakistan.

In the past 20 years, this is the second killing of a DIG- rank BSF officer in the state. In 1999, DIG S. K. Chakaraborty was assassinated by terrorists who sneaked into a BSF camp in the Kashmir Valley.

The Pakistan spy agency Inter- Services Intelligence is reportedly trying to infiltrate terrorists into India through the international border in the districts of Jammu, Samba and Kathua.
