Frost & Sullivan, a global leader in growth consulting, will honor breakthrough achievements across different sectors of the medical device industry at an awards banquet. BSD Medical was selected for its development of cutting-edge cancer therapy technology.

Frost & Sullivan described the qualifications for the award as follows in this announcement: "Frost & Sullivan presents its Technology Innovation of the Year Award each year to the company that has excelled in its market by outclassing competition in all stages of the technology lifecycle Most new technologies follow a similar technology lifecycle describing the technological maturity of a product. This is not similar to a product life cycle, but applies to an entire technology, or a generation of a technology.  -- incubation, adoption, take-up and maturity. By innovating leading-edge concepts, the company has pioneered client applications for the market. The superior technological sophistication so·phis·ti·cate

This Technology Innovation of the Year Award was given to BSD Medical Corp. for the development of the BSD-2000, which is used to selectively destroy cancer through focused RF energy, and to boost the effectiveness of radiation and chemotherapy in combined treatments. Conventional surface treatment methods used to perform similar therapies do not treat tumors that exist more than a few centimeters below the surface of the skin; consequently, deep tumors remain unaffected.

"The BSD-2000 overcomes such limitations by heating the tumor from inside out, employing a series of patented annular annular /an·nu·lar/ (an´u-ler) ring-shaped.

"BSD's technology focuses the energy waves to target the specific site of the tumor." Hyrum A. Mead, president of BSD Medical, said, "This Frost & Sullivan Technology Innovation of the Year Award only reinforces our belief that the BSD-2000 systems are among of the most innovative and truly remarkable emerging weapons in the world to be joining in the war against cancer, which has now surpassed heart disease as the leading cause of death in the United States."

BSD-2000/3D employs a revolutionary annular phased array of 24 dipole radiofrequency (RF) antennae placed around the patient to focus RF energy steered in 3D on the cancer. The system can also be used with simultaneous magnetic imaging to non-invasively monitor the treatment-in-progress of deep tumors.
