 the man who robbed a store and brutally attacked the owner, leaving her for dead, authorities said Tuesday.

A customer found the owner in a rear area of the business on North Victory Boulevard Victory Boulevard is a major thoroughfare on Staten Island, measuring approximately 8.0 miles (12.87 km) and stretching from the west shore community of Travis to the upper east shore communities of St. George and Tompkinsville.  just before 1 p.m. Monday, said Lt. Wade Taylor.

The woman, whose name is not being released, was in critical condition Tuesday at an undisclosed hospital, police said. She suffered ``blunt force trauma'' to her face and had been sexually assaulted.

``This kind of violent, sexual assault is very rare,'' Taylor said, declining to say what she was hit in the face with.

The customer who found the woman walked into the store around 12:30 p.m. and saw a suspicious looking man, without a shirt, standing behind the counter, Taylor said.

The customer asked for the owner and the bare-chested man told him she was busy in the back. The customer left and, thinking something was wrong, came back to check things out.

``She's in bad shape. This woman was brutally, I mean brutally attacked and beaten,'' said Lt. Don Brown.

Investigators have a number of leads, Brown said, declining to release any details until the attacker is in custody. He described the man as ``a very dangerous individual.''

The man behind the counter was described as white, 30 to 36 years old, approximately 5 feet 11 inches tall, 200 pounds with blond hair and a muscular build.
