Firefighters had another bout with summer heat Wednesday Wednesday: see week.  as they tackled a brush fire that came within 200 feet of a golf course, officials said.

The fire broke out at 4:31 p.m. in the dry, grass-covered Adj. 1. grass-covered - covered with grass; "wide grass-covered plains as far as the eye could see"

``We noticed it right away,'' said Elizabeth Sullivan, a waitress at the golf course's Half Way Cafe, where workers called 911.

``It started as a small circle fire but it grew really big, really quick. A small fire started on this side too, but they put that out right away.

Firefighters offered no immediate answer for what started the fire, which by 5:30 p.m. had burned about 30 acres.

As 200 firefighters from Lancaster, Palmdale and Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  and four water-dropping helicopters fought the fire, golfers, Little Leaguers and restaurant patrons watched the flames.

``It's blowing away from us so I think we'll be OK,'' said Sullivan.

Officials said that no homes or structures were threatened at the onset of the fire, which was blowing toward unoccupied hills.
