BRUSH FIRE SPREADS NORTH OF LAKE PIRU.

Two wildfires fueled by high temperatures scorched scorch

Firefighters also battled a second blaze that started in Lake View Terrace and burned 50 acres as it spread north into the Angeles National Forest.

That fire began about 5 p.m. in the 10200 block of Kurt Street and was mostly contained within three hours by firefighters drawn from Los Angeles city and county, Burbank and the Forest Service.

The Ventura County fire began near Lake Piru shortly after noon and was 5 percent contained by 8:30 p.m., Luna said. No houses were threatened as the fire moved into steep, wooded terrain north of the lake - but firefighters were heavily guarding the habitats of bird and frog species in the fire's path.

``We're putting all of our resources where they live,'' Luna said. ``We're trying to keep the fire away from their habitat.''

Nearly 30 engine companies, three water tenders and a half-dozen aircraft were used in the operation. The Ventura County Fire Department spokesman said he expects the fire to get worse today as crews contend with continued high temperatures and increasing winds.
