More than 100 acres burned in the Angeles National Forest near Pyramid Lake on the east side of the freeway. Firefighters launched a swift aerial assault on a brush fire that broke out Thursday and within hours had the blaze largely contained, authorities said.

More than 100 firefighters raced to the hilly brush-dotted area some 40 miles north of downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. ``We've knocked a large percentage of the fire out,'' said Los Angeles County Fire Department Not to be confused with Los Angeles Fire Department.

No structures in the sparsely populated area near Pyramid Lake were reported to have been threatened.

Two lanes of the northbound Interstate 5, a main route connecting Los Angeles with San Francisco, were closed until about noon Friday while firefighting equipment was parked to the side of the road. The right lane was due to open by 6 p.m. to help alleviate traffic leaving town for the weekend.

On Thursday, the entire northbound side was closed briefly as heavy smoke blanketed the freeway, limiting visibility.

The forest land, dried by years of drought and low humidity over the summer, is especially prone to fire this year, officials said.
