The fire appeared to have started beside the northbound freeway lanes just north of the Barrel Springs Road overpass.

Fire officials were unable immediately to say what started the fire, which was reported at 3:29 p.m.

To knock down the fire quickly, Los Angeles County fire officials attacked it with 10 fire engines, five inmate crews, and a bulldozer, plus helicopters.

Near Tehachapi, Kern County, U.S. Forest Service, Tehachapi state prison and California City firefighters extinguished grass fires that started about four hours apart and burned about nine acres.

The cause of the Kern County fires has not been determined, but officials do not suspect arson, a Kern County Fire Department spokesman said.
