``This loss won't stick for me,'' Kris Johnson said of Saturday's 91-87 defeat to Arizona. ``Everybody will dwell on it, but the seniors aren't going to trip on this.

``It's sad because we lost our last game in Pauley Pavilion Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion, informally and commonly known as Pauley Pavilion, is an indoor arena located on the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles, California. It is home to the UCLA Bruins men's and women's basketball teams. The men's and women's volleyball teams also play here.  . . . but as we always do, we're putting a positive spin on it. We saw how good we can be.''

And how good they must be to survive the six-game, single-elimination tournament A single-elimination tournament, also called a knockout or sudden death tournament, is a type of tournament where the loser of each match is immediately eliminated from winning the championship or first prize in the event. , which begins Thursday with first-round games in the East and West regions.

The Bruins will watch the selection show (Channel 2, 3:30 p.m.) together on campus. They're hoping for a No. 4 seeding but expecting a No. 5 or 6. To a man, they claim no preference for site or opponent.

, Duke, Kansas and Arizona are expected to be the No. 1 seeds. Assuming the Wildcats are in the West, UCLA will be shipped to Oklahoma City, Chicago, Atlanta, Lexington, Ky., Washington, D.C. or Hartford, Conn., for first-round play.

As for UCLA's seeding, consider this: The 4s and 5s are paired with No. 1s for Sweet 16 matchups. Given the Bruins' performances against the heavies this season - four losses by 93 points - they might be better off as a No. 6 and bracketed with the 2s and 3s.

Then again, the lower the seed, the tougher the first-round opponent. With five losses in their last 10 games, the Bruins aren't exactly sprinting into March Madness.

``We saw that Arizona had a tough road last year and did it,'' Toby Bailey said of the Wildcats' improbable charge to the title as a fourth-seeded team. ``Hopefully, we can follow their path.''

Possible first-round opponents include Nebraska, Iowa, Miami, Illinois State, Iona, Wake Forest, George Washington and, especially, Murray State, coached by former Bruins assistant Mark Gottfried.

``It'd be fun to play coach Gottfried,'' J.R. Henderson said.
