It wasn't the prettiest of games by any means, but UCLA held off Temple for a 54-47 win Thursday in the second round of the NIT A measurement of luminance. Howland said Collins would be guarded by a combination of Afflalo and Bozeman but Afflalo did a fine job on Collins and that freed Bozeman to battle in the low post and get eight first-half rebounds. He also scored 11 points.

Collins was held to six points in the first half and 15 for the game. Afflalo scored 18 points to lead UCLA in scoring for the second consecutive game.

UCLA struggled against Temple's zone, which the Owls employed for the entire game. But Temple was also cold in the first half and made just six of 28 shots (21.4 percent).

The Owls pulled within three points at 47-44 with just over five minutes left in the game on a pair of free throws by Collins. But that's as close as Temple would get.

Ryan Hollins answered for the Bruins when he got an offensive rebound, was fouled and made both of his shots. After Mark Tyndale missed an inside shot on the other end, Hollins dunked off a nice assist by Jordan Farmar, who drove the lane and found Hollins open.

With the score tied 14-14, UCLA went on a 17-4 run to close the first half with a 33-18 lead. Antywane Robinson made a 3-pointer from the top of the arc with about 4 1/2 minutes left in the half, but Temple didn't score the rest of the half.

UCLA's lead quickly evaporated in the second half. Collins cut the lead to 10 on a 3-pointer, then stole the ball and scored on a fastbreak layup to cut the Bruins' advantage to 42-34 with 11 minutes left. The Owls pulled to within five points, 42-37, on a 3-point play by Dionte Christmas.

Bruins backup point guard Darren Collison made a 3-pointer that got the crowd going with 5:09 left in the first half. The freshman played 12 minutes in the first half, probably more than Howland planned, because Farmar was on the bench with two fouls. Farmar committed his second foul with 12:25 left and didn't play the rest of the first half.

Farmar drove the lane, missed a shot and fell with about two minutes left. He ran down the court hobbling, appearing to have some sort of injury to his right foot or ankle. He buried his head in his knees on the bench but returned with one minute left and was back to the bench, still hobbling a little, with 25 seconds left. He finished with four points.

Collison played well in UCLA's two exhibition games but was silent against New Mexico State in the season opener. Against Temple, he was called for a charge with 10 1/2 minutes left and missed a layup with eight minutes left.

UCLA took plenty of 3-pointers in the first half since it couldn't seem to get the ball inside against Temple's zone. The Bruins converted 5 of 14 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes.

UCLA plays Delaware State Saturday at Pauley Pavilion.
