BRUINS OPEN WITH FRESH LOOK.

Byline: Jon Wilner Daily News Staff Writer

When Bob Toledo Bob Toledo (born March 4, 1946, in San Jose, California) is an American football coach, recently hired as head coach at Tulane University. He is best-known as the thirteenth head coach at UCLA.  was named UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

football coach on Jan. 4, he gathered his players and promised they would see substantial change in the coming months. There would be a new approach, he vowed, with new positions, new schemes and a new appearance.

The Toledo era officially begins this morning at 9:30, when the Bruins take Spaulding Field for their first practice, and on all fronts Toledo has kept his word. On Friday, players talked of a new attitude. The new offensive and defensive schemes are in place, waiting for the first snap, and the program indeed has a new look cosmetically.

With athletic director Athletic director (commonly, "athletics director") is a position at many American colleges and universities, as well as in larger high schools and middle schools, which oversees the work of the coaches and related staff involved in intercollegiate or interscholastic athletic  Pete Dalis' blessing, Toledo has given the Bruins his personal touch. His office, occupied for two decades by Terry Donahue Terry Donahue (born June 24, 1944 in Los Angeles, California) is a former college football coach and NFL general manager, and a current football analyst. , has been remodeled. The weight room has new carpeting, new platforms and a new strength and conditioning coach, Kevin Yoxall, whose offseason program received high marks from players and coaches alike.

Toledo changed the uniforms, too. The Bruins will wear white shoes, with black and blue stripes, ``like the ones the Cowboys wore in the Super Bowl,'' he said.

The home jerseys will remain the traditional powder blue. But the numbers are now in Gothic script Gothic script may refer to:

with thick black outlines, similar to those worn in the 1950s and 60s and much easier to spot from high in the stands.

The gold helmets have a new design, as well. The UCLA lettering will be bigger, bolder, and each player's number will appear on the back of his helmet.

The changes aren't glaring, and Toledo didn't intend them to be so. But they are noticeable enough for all to see this is a new era, that this is his team.

``The kids like to see change,'' Toledo said. ``We looked at everything and asked, `Is this going to help?' Every change, I believe, was to make it better. The weight room is better. The locker room is better. We didn't change things just to change them.''

A UCLA helmet has been painted on the outside wall of the locker room, near the entrance across from Pauley Pavilion Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion, informally and commonly known as Pauley Pavilion, is an indoor arena located on the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles, California. It is home to the UCLA Bruins men's and women's basketball teams. The men's and women's volleyball teams also play here. , and an overhang provides shade at the entrance.

``The changes matter because it makes you look at things and say, `This isn't the same old UCLA,' '' tailback Skip Hicks Brian "Skip" LaVell Hicks (born October 13, 1974 in Corsicana, Texas) is a former American football running back in the NFL.
