When Nick Paneno and Pete Vagenas decided to play soccer for UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

, they did so in part because of coach Sigi Schmid Siegfried "Sigi" Schmid (born March 20 1953 in Tübingen, West Germany) is a soccer coach who currently heads the Columbus Crew.

Schmid moved from Germany to Torrance, California in 1962. He received a B.S. in economics from UCLA in 1976, and an M.
. But they also knew that such a high-profile coach might not be around for their entire college careers.

``He's got bigger aspirations, like the rest of us,'' said Vagenas, a St. Francis graduate and the Daily News' 1996 Player of the Year.

``We've come to realize he's a coach in demand,'' said Paneno, a La Canada graduate. ``It's a matter of time before he got offered a job he couldn't turn down.''

That time came when Schmid told his players April 21 that he accepted the head coaching job with the Galaxy.

``Everyone wished him the best of luck,'' Paneno said. ``We were happy for him. It's been one of his goals. It was an emotional sendoff send·off

He spent his professional career in the Western Soccer Alliance and its successor league, the American Professional Soccer League. He also earned 14 caps with the U.S. , although former Bruins and current Loyola Marymount coach Paul Krumpe also might be considered.

``It'd be an honor to be in the running to be the coach at UCLA,'' Krumpe said. ``It's one of the top five positions in the country, so I realize how strong the interest would be. And I'm interested in developing what I've got going here at LMU LMU Ludwig Maximilians Universität (München)

Moneymaker, 21, has said she wants to use college as a springboard to international competition, and the World University Games will be her first appearance on a national team.

Moneymaker also became the first gymnast in school history to earn the maximum five first-team All-America honors (all-around, vault, bars, beam, floor) at the NCAAs.
