in an attempt to win over the heralded recruit and his family - a breakfast with John Wooden.

``That was unbelievable,'' Brockman said. ``I'd met him a couple of times. That man, he's an incredible man. It was the experience of a lifetime.''

His mother Becky agreed. But even a visit with Wooden couldn't trump Brockman's family. And Brockman, who's from Snohomish, Wash., chose Washington over the Bruins and others.

Brockman is starting and already having an impressive freshman season for the 13th-ranked Huskies (13-2, 2-2 Pac-10), who play No. 11 UCLA (14-2, 4-1) today at Pauley Pavilion Edwin W. Pauley Pavilion, informally and commonly known as Pauley Pavilion, is an indoor arena located on the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles, California. It is home to the UCLA Bruins men's and women's basketball teams. The men's and women's volleyball teams also play here. .

Brockman, who is 6-foot-7 and 245 pounds, is averaging 10.1 points and is fourth in the Pac-10 in rebounding with 7.1 per game. He won a starting spot in Washington coach Lorenzo Romar's starting rotation by the season opener.

``He gives you everything he has,'' Romar said. ``He looks you in the eye when you constructively criticize him. You try to motivate him. He nods his head and says, 'Whatever you need me to do, Coach.' ''

Bruins coach Ben Howland Ben Howland (born May 28, 1957 in Lebanon, Oregon) is an American college head coach of men's basketball.

He has been the head coach of the University of California, Los Angeles since 2003, and recently signed a contract extension through 2013.
loves to recruit big, strong frontcourt players, who helped make his Pittsburgh teams successful.

``UCLA wanted him badly,'' said Rick Kimbrel, a recruiting analyst for Rivals.com. ``They were one of the first teams to acknowledge him as a Division I-type guy. It's hard to get a kid away from home.''

Brockman, the youngest of four children, is the son of educators. Becky is an elementary school elementary school: see school.  principal and his dad, Gordy, is an assistant principal at Snohomish High. Neither can take much time off work, and Brockman wanted his family to be a part of his collegiate basketball career.

before he was 3. He credits family pickup games for instilling work ethic.

``They would always beat me,'' Jon said. ``I was always losing to one of them. That made me work harder every time.''

Gordy was at the Sports Arena, where Brockman had nine points and seven rebounds in Washington's 86-77 win over USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  on Thursday. Becky stayed behind for her school's Grandparents' Day on Friday, but will be in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  for today's game.

Turning down UCLA wasn't easy for anyone in the family, according to Becky.

``Between coach Howland and coach Wooden and (Pauley Pavilion), we know they're building something special there,'' Becky said. ``Coach Howland and his staff were incredible. That made it a difficult choice. But (Jon's) a family guy. When it came down to it, he wanted to play where his family and friends could continue to be part of it.''

UCLA probably figured it had a better chance of landing Brockman when his good friend, Adam Heater, committed to play for the Bruins' football team. The Heaters and the Brockmans became good friends as a result of their childhood friendship. Heater said Brockman is one of the top five people he's ever met - and one of the most competitive.

``Jon's always been competitive,'' Heater said. ``He can play basketball in jeans and go full-speed diving for balls. That's how he is. He loves to compete.''

Romar said players like Brockman come around once every 10 years.

The praise is just fine for Brockman, as long as he makes good on those statements.

``I have to be able to back that up,'' Brockman said. ``I'm just playing as hard as I can. That's what I try to do every time I'm on the court.''
