Each one of the 487 Brownies from 42 troops citywide experienced that same feeling Saturday during the 15th annual competition at Simi Valley High School Simi Valley High School is a secondary school located in Simi Valley, California which was established in 1920 as the first high school in the valley. It nestles in the Santa Susana Mountains and is adjacent to the San Fernando Valley, part of the city and county of Ventura. .

``They are so proud they've earned something,'' Kohler said. ``You can walk around and see the smiles on their faces.''

The Brownies competed in as many as six of the eight events: softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  throw; obstacle course obstacle course

Participation in only one event was enough to earn a gold medal, pin and patch.

``Each girl that participates is a winner - no matter the age, race, size, anything,'' said Toni Mallory, event director. ``It builds self-esteem, character and team spirit. And they get to meet their sister Brownies.''

The Brownilympics is also the only Girl Scouts Girl Scouts, recreational and service organization founded (1912) in Savannah, Ga., by Mrs. Juliette Gordon Low (1860–1927). It was originally modeled after the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, organizations created in Great Britain by Sir Robert Baden-Powell during  of America-sponsored event where fathers alone serve as volunteers - more than 100 were on hand Saturday.

``You get to spend a beautiful day with your daughter,'' said John Parks, who brought his 8-year-old Cindy from Troop 112. ``That's what being a dad is all about. There's no substitute for it.''

Competing in events meant more than simply having fun, Cindy said.

``You stay healthy that way,'' she said.

While the girls, ages 6 through 10, felt like winners, the event's organizers were behind the fiscal eight ball, having raised only $1,600 of the $6,000 sponsorship goal to supplement an overall budget of $8,000.

To make up the difference organizers charged each participant $5 and were hoping to sell 600 Brownilympics bean bears, 1,000 pins and a mountain of food.

``We really need sponsorships from the community of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  to support the event,'' said Kohler, adding that planning for next year's event begins today. ``We struggle every year.
