He'd rather sit down the line, where he can carefully watch the pitchers warming up in the bullpen.

``I'm always the guy who goes down by the bullpen,'' said Brown, who regularly attends JetHawks games at Lancaster Municipal Stadium. ``I love watching them and seeing what they throw and where they like to throw it.''

The lessons have paid dividends. His .432 average and clutch hitting for the Spirits (7-6) have left opposing coaches constantly looking toward their own bullpens.

Not bad for a sophomore.

``He's a coach's dream,'' coach Steve Haggerty said. ``You're going to hear a lot about this kid. Not only is he good, he's also a student of the game.''

Brown (6-3, 225 pounds) was called up to the varsity midway through his freshman season and had an immediate impact. He took over the starting third-base job and moved into the No. 5 spot in the batting order Noun 1. batting order - (baseball) a list of batters in the order in which they will bat; "the managers presented their cards to the umpire at home plate"

After each league game, Brown would return to his home in Agua Dulce Agua Dulce is Spanish for "sweet water". It also refers to various locations:

Now, others are taking note.

  • John O'Connor, American football coach
. ``Dave is just a great hitter.''

Haggerty, who also serves as the school's football coach, has had to fight the temptation to lure his big, young slugger to the gridiron.

``I'm real careful about separating the two sports,'' Haggerty said. ``But I think he has a future with baseball.''

That would be fine with Brown, who aspires to one day play at the collegiate level.

``My goal has always been to play college baseball,'' he said. ``Some guys dream about pro baseball, but being a college player is my dream. Anything beyond that would just be extra.''

Brown also is the sixth man on Paraclete's varsity basketball team.

``He's headed for the next level,'' Haggerty said. ``Not only based on his playing ability, but because of the overall package.

``His personal skills, academic skills and athletic skills make a package that would be hard for just about anyone to pass up.''
