had been slated to coach the Ventura County South All-Star team tonight.

Then Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  High School's Dave Murphy asked his coaching rival for a favor.

``This is a special year for me with the type of season that (the Pioneers) had and the amount of seniors that we have playing in this game,'' Murphy said. ``So I just basically asked Chuck if it was OK if I coached the team this year.''

Brown stepped aside without hesitation, giving Murphy one last opportunity to coach perhaps the most outstanding group of players he's had at Simi Valley.

``It's something that I really appreciate Chuck doing,'' Murphy said.

The team's standout player is University of California The University of California has a combined student body of more than 191,000 students, over 1,340,000 living alumni, and a combined systemwide and campus endowment of just over $7.3 billion (8th largest in the United States). , Santa Barbara-bound Tawnee Cooper, who was considered the county's best player this past season. But Murphy is just as thrilled to send off Jamie Griffin, Angela Mosesso and Kayla Hughes.

``They're a great group of kids,'' Murphy said. ``And that's not to take anything away from anybody else. It's just that I've known them for such a long period of time. They mean a lot to me.''

All are expected to play big roles in tonight's game, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Ventura High School Ventura High School is a secondary school located in Ventura, California. It is a California Distinguished School which was founded in 1889.

But they aren't the only talented players Murphy has to work with.

``What we seem to have is a bunch of scorers,'' Murphy said. ``We've got a lot of kids that can put the ball in the basket.''

Cooper is the best of the bunch, but Westlake's Megan Carmola, a forward, can also fill it up, as can Newbury Park's Amy Berman, perhaps the area's best 3-point shooter. Mosesso can also shoot from the outside.

The South also has talented Tina Milbrun from Moorpark and Melissa Shoden from Newbury Park.

``Everybody we have is a heck of a player,'' said Murphy. ``And they're great competitors. Let's face it, they wouldn't be where they are without having the ability to compete.''

Murphy feels the same way about the North team, which is coached by Santa Clara's Sherri Cvijanovich. ``I'm sure it will be a hotly hot·ly
