BROWN DOWN, BATTERS UP HRS BY BELTRE, COOMER BACK ACE IN VICTORY DODGERS 6, COLORADO 4.

Kevin Brown The name Kevin Brown can refer to several different people, including the following:
  • Kevin Brown (baseball) (b. 1965), a former Major League Baseball right-handed starting pitcher with 211 career wins
  • Kevin D. Brown (b.

The Dodgers remain 1 1/2 games back - though they trail six teams - in a tense wild-card race. Why else would Dodgers manager Jim Tracy

Brown struck out nine and allowed just three hits and four runs, all courtesy of Payton.

The Dodgers have wasted so many quality starts by Brown this season because they couldn't score. It seemed only fitting that they save him for a change.

``The big thing is that we put some runs on the board ourselves and they bailed me out,'' Brown said of his teammates. ``It's nice to be able to make some mistakes and (still) score some runs.''

Eric Gagne earned his 45th save in as many opportunities and took over the major-league lead in saves. He also became the first pitcher to post consecutive 45-save seasons, and he has 53 consecutive saves, one shy of Tom Gordon's record of 54 in a row with Boston in 1998 and 1999.

Gagne allowed a leadoff single by Todd Helton Todd Lynn Helton[1] (born August 20, 1973 in Knoxville, Tennessee)[2] is a Major League Baseball first baseman who has played for the Colorado Rockies since the 1997 season.  in the ninth, then struck out Preston Wilson Preston James Richard Wilson is a Major League Baseball outfielder, playing for the St. Louis Cardinals. Payton's two homers never crossed Gagne's mind.

``I try not to think about that,'' Gagne said. ``That's negative thinking. I just wanted to get the save and the win.''

Brown got the win, his 13th of the season. He also provided a little scare in the sixth. During Helton's at-bat in the sixth, he took a couple of extra steps off the mound and grimaced grim·ace

``I just slipped off the mound,'' Brown said.

Catcher Paul Lo Duca Paul Anthony Lo Duca (born April 12, 1972 in Brooklyn, New York) is a catcher in Major League Baseball who plays for the New York Mets. Previously, Lo Duca played for the Los Angeles Dodgers (1998-2004) and Florida Marlins (2004-2005).  went out to the mound and Brown stayed in the game, getting Helton to ground out. He then batted in the bottom of the sixth.

in his groin,'' Lo Duca said. ``I asked him if it was still bothering him and he said, `Just give me some time.' ''

Coomer and Beltre hit solo home runs. Coomer's tied the game in the fourth and Beltre's, off Rockies starter Cory Vance with two outs in the fifth, was the game-winner. It was Beltre's 16th home run this season and 10th since the All-Star break.

Rickey Henderson drew a bases-loaded walk off Adam Bernero to give the Dodgers a two-run cushion in the sixth and then Brown and the bullpen did its job to get the ball to Gagne.

And as the popular Gagne T-shirts read: ``Game Over.''

Tracy ran out of the dugout in the sixth when the Dodgers loaded the bases with two outs. Henderson hit a ball along the right-field line that was ruled foul by first-base umpire Mark Wegner. Replays seemed to show the ball was foul.

and we haven't been able to get,'' Tracy said. ``It's a very close observation you have to make. To me, it's fairly clear the ball was fair.''

The victory against a National League West team was unusual, as the Dodgers have struggled within their division, going 20-30.

Payton got to Brown early as he hit a one-out, two-run homer in the second inning to give Colorado a 2-0 lead. He added a two-run homer in the fourth that went just over the outstretched out·stretch

The waiver deadline to clear trades is Sunday night and the Dodgers are still working the phones. But with eight teams within 1 1/2 games of each other in the NL wild-card race, there hasn't been much action.

``We've made clubs aware of what we want to do,'' Dodgers general manager Dan Evans said. ``I don't think you ever know (if something will happen) this time of year because there's so few teams that are trading.''

But the Dodgers have new players to work with since rosters expand to 40 players Sunday night. That means Dodgers fans could get a chance to see some of the farm system's young talent, like Joe Thurston - who was supposed to be the Dodgers' everyday second baseman this season.
