BROWN ANNOUNCES BREAST CANCER SUMMIT.

 will host a regional summit for researchers, activists, outreach workers and physicians to organize and launch an offensive against breast cancer.

``It may lead to more public attention on a disease that has reached a crisis medical situation in this region, particularly San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden ,'' Brown said.

More than 300 guests will attend the daylong breast cancer summit on Nov. 9.

Research will be a major focus, with doctors reviewing known risk factors and environmental concerns.

Treatment issues also will be addressed, particularly the difficulty some women face getting care.

The Bay Area has some of the highest reported rates of breast cancer in the world for white women, for reasons not well understood.

Breast cancer survivors Cancer survivors are those individuals with cancer of any type, current or past, who are still living. The National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS) pioneered the definition of survivor as from the time of diagnosis and for the balance of life, a person diagnosed with  and advocates for research have played a major role in planning the conference. Also participating in the planning were City Attorney Louise Renne, Supervisor Leslie Katz, and the Commission on the Status of Women Noun 1. Commission on the Status of Women - the commission of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations that is concerned with the status of women in different societies .

``We anticipate some very dynamic dialogue at the breast cancer summit,'' said Dr. Sandra R. Hernandez, director of the city Department of Health, the event's main organizer.

``This is an opportunity for major policymakers to hear important messages from survivors and advocates,'' Hernandez said. ``We must provide Bay Area women with an accurate understanding of what we do and do not yet know about this disease.''
