BROWN 'WILL SHAKE HANDS WITH GADDAFI' Pair's UN talks set to intensify Lockerbie storm.

Byline: JAMES LYONS

GORDON Brown will risk reigniting the Lockerbie row this week by shaking hands with Colonel Gaddafi.

The Prime Minister and Libyan dictator are due to meet at the United Nations nuclear disarmament talks in America.

Ministers want to use the event to justify restoring diplomatic and trade links with his regime.

In return, the Libyan leader has agreed to abandon his efforts to develop an atomic bomb atomic bomb or A-bomb, weapon deriving its explosive force from the release of atomic energy through the fission (splitting) of heavy nuclei (see nuclear energy). The first atomic bomb was produced at the Los Alamos, N.Mex. .

But the meeting will intensify fury about the decision to free Abdelbaset Ali al Megrahi, the only person convicted over the Lockerbie bombings.

Revealing Mr Brown expects to shake Gaddafi's hand, a Downing Street insider said: "This is a good opportunity to highlight Libya has come in from the cold and given up its nuclear programme."

The PM and the Libyan leader will meet at talks chaired by President Barack Obama at the UN's HQ in New York New York, state, United States

Tony Blair shook Gaddafi's hand when the pair struck their infamous "deal in the desert" two years ago. The agreement paved the way for Megrahi's release from his Scottish jail. The ex-intelligence officer, who is dying from prostate cancer, was freed on compassionate grounds last month.

Ministers have repeatedly denied he was allowed home in return for oil and trade concessions.

This week's UN meeting also comes as Mr Brown faces mounting pressure to get results on the murder of WPC WPC (in Britain) woman police constable

Opposition parties have called for Mr Brown to apologise but he dismissed the incident as "trivia".
