BROWN'S HINT ON END OF pounds.


BRITAIN could vote soon on scrapping the pound, Chancellor Gordon Brown hinted yesterday.

A referendum on joining the European single currency could be scheduled for early in the next Parliament, he said.

The Government had not changed its policy that there were "advantages in principle in being in a single currency".

He added: "But we felt the decision should be based on applying the economic tests we set down and then making a considered judgment.

"And we felt that the realistic time to make that would almost certainly be at the beginning of the next Parliament - and it would be subject to a decision of the British people See :
