BROOMAND ONLY INCUMBENT RUNNING BEHIND.

Byline: Cecilia Chan Staff Writer

Most of the incumbents were leading late Tuesday to fill seats in local city council and school board races.

However, in Westlake Village, City Councilman Iraj Broomand appeared to have lost his seat while Councilman Mark Rutherford

``I'm not really quite sure whether this is the final verdict yet,'' said Broomand, who was tracking the election results on the government- access cable channel.

Broomand attributed his showing at the polls to a last-minute mailer (1) An e-mail program. See e-mail program.

``The negative campaigning Negative campaigning is trying to win an advantage by referring to negative aspects of an opponent or of a policy rather than emphasizing one's own positive attributes or preferred policies.  that went on, a total lie, that has had some effect,'' Broomand said. ``I think that's unfortunate; the whole idea of negative campaigning is beginning to take hold in this area.

``We've never had this kind of thing in the past and I intend to fight against it in the future whether I win or lose.''

Councilmen Ed Corridori, Jeff Reinhardt and Denis Denis, king of Portugal: see Diniz.  Weber were leading opponents Melvin Adams, Dan Crisafulli, Ken Horton, George C. Thomas and Bob Wachs.

``We've had a great four years in our city, so many successes,'' Corridori said. ``It's hard to imagine why people would want to make changes.''

Voters split when it came to the city's two bed-tax measures, T and U.

Voters were comfortable in voting for Measure T, which again raises the city's 1990 transient occupancy tax Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) is levied for the privilege of occupying a room or rooms or other living space in a hotel, inn, tourist home or house, motel or other lodging (defined below) for a period of 30 days or less. , this time from 6 percent to 10 percent, a hike that was called into question by a court ruling.

However, they came out against Measure U, which would give the council the authority to adjust the bed tax rate within a range of 4 percent without having to go to a vote of the people.
