to Establish Worldwide Public Key Infrastructure

BROKAT Infosystems AG, the leading provider of electronic transaction software to the international financial services community, announced today that it will support initiatives of the recently established Global Trust Enterprise to develop a worldwide public key infrastructure (PKI). Global Trust Enterprise is a recently announced consortium of eight leading international banks, including BROKAT clients ABN AMRO and Deutsche Bank, and CertCo, a US security solutions company. Global Trust Enterprise has been created to provide security for electronic business transacted globally over the Internet. The new company will serve as a certificate authority (CA) with the ability to issue digital certificates and to authenticate the identity of both the sending and receiving parties. "It is a natural progression in the development of a global Internet security architecture that the banking community should assume the role of certificate authority," explained Scott Pranger, general manager for BROKAT US. "Banks have long been recognized as a point of trust, and they have the relationships and points of distribution to easily assume the leadership role in a global CA infrastructure." Online financial transactions, the dissemination of confidential research and development information, electronic order placements and invoicing, and other types of critical electronic data interchange require strong security measures to ensure authentication and integrity. Global Trust Enterprise, which will be managed by known and trusted members of the international banking community, makes possible the worldwide mutual acceptance of digital certificates in the area of finance, and forms the basis for the use of digital signatures in all electronic transactions. BROKAT will support the resultant PKI with its award-winning E-services platform Twister(tm) and create smooth interoperability between the companies and banks involved.
