BROADHEADS.The Lighter Side of Replaceable-Blade Light/lightweight: This is archery's current mantra mantra (măn`trə, mŭn–), in Hinduism and Buddhism, mystic words used in ritual and meditation. A mantra is believed to be the sound form of reality, having the power to bring into being the reality it represents. . Light bows make toting your weapon during a high-altitude hunt easier. Lightweight arrows make those bows faster. Light broadheads make that arrow shoot flatter. Nowhere has weight trimming been more noticeable than in replaceable-blade broadheads. Recently 125 grains was voguishly light-the industry standard for hunting broadheads. Lighter models have now replaced them as the most popular broadhead weight in the business. Bob Mizek, New Archery archery, sport of shooting with bow and arrow, an important military and hunting skill before the introduction of gunpowder. England's Charles II fostered archery as sport, establishing in 1673 the world's oldest continuous archery tournament, the Ancient Scorton Product's production manager, tells me 100-grain replaceable-blade heads now compose 50 percent of their total sales. Muzzy's Michele Crummer says 100-grain and lighter heads make up nearly 75 percent of their sales, attributing this to the carbon arrow's meteoric me·te·or·ic adj. 1. Of, relating to, or formed by a meteoroid. 2. Of or relating to the earth's atmosphere. 3. popularity. One hundred-grain heads, even lighter, are here to stay. Lighter heads balance lighter arrows. With average carbon arrows weighing eight to nine grains per inch--the heaviest weighing maybe 12-a 100-grain head provides ample Front Of Center (F.O.C.) balance and consistent, manageable flight. Even with my 30-inch draw length and 70-pound draw, a 100-grain broadhead gives me 10 to 12 percent F.O.C., well within accepted limits for broadhead accuracy. Given a shorter draw length and lighter shafts, you may make due with an 85- or even a 75-grain head. You could screw in a 125-grain head and boost F.O.C. to 15 or 20 percent, maintaining accuracy and arrow groups, but you will sacrifice trajectory Trajectory The curve described by a body moving through space, as of a meteor through the atmosphere, a planet around the Sun, a projectile fired from a gun, or a rocket in flight. in the process. This is a matter of balance. You can have your accuracy and flat trajectory too. The kinetic energy kinetic energy: see energy. kinetic energy Form of energy that an object has by reason of its motion. The kind of motion may be translation (motion along a path from one place to another), rotation about an axis, vibration, or any combination of crowd need not worry. We're talking replaceable-blade broadheads, not energy-gobbling mechanicals, and unless elk-sized or larger animals are at stake, the discussion is moot An issue presenting no real controversy. Moot refers to a subject for academic argument. It is an abstract question that does not arise from existing facts or rights. . Most of us hunt deer. It becomes a matter of how much dirt you wish to penetrate behind the animal after a pass-through. Lightness aside, replaceable-blade models have won over bowhunters because they are convenient and, as important, inherently accurate. Slide in a fresh set of blades, and you're bowhunting Bowhunting is the practice of taking game animals by archery. Technique In contrast to a rifle hunter, who may shoot effectively from ranges in excess of 200 yards (about 180 m), archers will usually restrict shots to 45 yards or less, depending on factors such as shaving-sharp again. With a reasonable amount of bow tuning, your average replaceable-blade head groups as well as field points. If it does not, you need to spend more time tuning your bow. Combine supreme accuracy with lighter weight and you get the whole of modern archery in a single package. Today's bowhunters want more speed without sacrificing accuracy. Today's archers want to shoot farther with the same degree of confidence once enjoyed at shorter ranges. Today's equipment is more accurate than ever. What was considered a long shot 10 years ago is feasible today given sufficient skill and practice. Lighter heads flatten flatten - To remove structural information, especially to filter something with an implicit tree structure into a simple sequence of leaves; also tends to imply mapping to flat ASCII. "This code flattens an expression with parentheses into an equivalent canonical form." trajectory and give the archer a greater margin of error when ranges become a bit farther than usual, adding five to seven fps to the average setup. They do this without sacrificing one bit of durability. Ask NAP's owner Andy Simo or Muzzy's Michele Crummer and they will tell you: Not a single bit of dependability has been sacrificed to make heads lighter. Decreased weight normally comes with decreased cutting diameter: A 1 3/16-inch-wide 125-grain becomes a 1- or 1 1/8-inch 100. Incidentally, all other factors being equal, decreasing cutting diameter also increases penetration. This also accounts for the lighter head's dependable flight characteristics. Whether you'rr pulling 60 to 70 pounds and wanting more speed, shooting moderate weight during cold late seasons or simply preferring not to tug heman weight, today's replaceable-blade market has a head for you. The Thunderhead Pro Series sports microgroves along the length of each scalloped surface. These groves act like the dimples on a golf ball, adding stability and tighter arrow groups at longer ranges. These come with a slightly higher price tag, but you'll still be able to buy standard Thunderheads. Barrie Archery Barrie Archery just keeps coming up with new ways of looking at broadheads. Barrie was the first to use titanium titanium (tītā`nēəm, tĭ–) [from Titan], metallic chemical element; symbol Ti; at. no. 22; at. wt. 47.88; m.p. 1,675°C;; b.p. 3,260°C;; sp. gr. 4.54 at 20°C;; valence +2, +3, or +4. in a broadhead and this year designed a head with a slide-on replaceable-blade cartridge to allow replacement of three blades all at once. The Titanium (Ti) has become Barrie's hallmark head. Titanium combines the lightness of aluminum with the strength of steel. Now offered in 100 and 85 grains (besides 125), the Ti offers a one-piece ferrule and Unicut cut-on-contact tip, a self-centering steel "Blade-Lock" collar and .030 stainless blades. The new Warhead 100 Fixed allows the bowhunter to choose between fixed- or mechanical-blade cartridge systems. The fixed cartridge offers .030-thick blade design with a Tri-Cut, pre-aligned tip for better penetration and 1 1/8-inch low profile for increased accuracy. This design allows someone who is all thumbs to replace all three blades at once. The Premier 125 is one of Barrie's faithful standbys, long respected for tough "Power-Point," strong .030-inch blades and a self-aligning collar. This three-blade head now comes in a 1 3/10-inch-wide 100-grain and a 1 1/8-inch 75-grain. The Razor Lite 100 (also in 125) combines a cut-on-contact tip with pre-aligned, .030 stainless blades for deep penetration. The Razor Lite also features a 1 1/8-inch cutting diameter and a self-centering locking collar for maximum accuracy. WASP wasp, name applied to many winged insects of the order Hymenoptera, which also includes ants and bees. Most wasps are carnivorous, feeding on insects, grubs, or spiders. They have biting mouthparts, and the females have stings with which they paralyze their prey. Archery Products WASP was first to introduce replaceable blades to archery. Today WASP is responsible for some of the toughest replaceable-blade heads in archery, sending Hammer SST SST: see airplane. l00s through 10 sections of flattened flat·ten v. flat·tened, flat·ten·ing, flat·tens v.tr. 1. Archery Group The Straight-Razor is Satellite's most modem head, featuring a case-hardened steel Noun 1. case-hardened steel - steel with a surface that is much harder than the interior metal steel - an alloy of iron with small amounts of carbon; widely used in construction; mechanical properties can be varied over a wide range pyramid tip with edges aligned and at the same attack angle as its three blades for cut-on-contact performance, a continuous cut assuring deep penetration. The 100-grain Straight-Razor includes .027-inch stainless blades and a 1%-inch cutting diameter. The Satellite Mag is a proven design that has been around since the 1980s. With a hardened-steel chisel point and three-blade design, this head remains a top contender today. Available in 100 and 75 grains, the former provides a 1 1/8-inch cutting diameter from its .027-inch-thick blades; the 75 features the same, but with .020-inch blades. The Aero 125s I grew up with are now available in 100 grains. These 1 1/16-inch-wide heads with .010-inch carbon blades are great for budget-minded archers after deer and smaller game. Chuck Adams Bowhunting Gear includes the 100-grain Spear Point Broadhead, featuring a patented cut-on-contact point, 7178 aluminum alloy ferrule and three microhoned blades. The Super Slam Light Broadhead System offers choices tipped by the same cutting Spear Point. Dependability in broadheads once meant trading flat trajectory in the process. Today's modem metals and better engineering mean you give up nothing in order to enjoy a lighter head. You can have faster arrows, flatter down-range trajectory and still depend on your point to penetrate deeply and hold together when it gets there. You can do it all with less weight. Replaceable-blade heads are tough, even in lighter sizes. The author took this heavyweight bull elk elk, name applied to several large members of the deer family. It most properly designates the largest member of the family, Alces alces, found in the northern regions of Eurasia and North America. In North America this animal is called moose. with a lightweight, Muzzy 90-grain, four-blade broadhead. Replaceable-blade broadheads spell accuracy. Even with a minimum of bow tuning, you should be able to get your replaceable-blade heads to fly as well as field points. The lower-profile, lightweight heads will offer even better flight characteristics. A well-tuned bow seldom has trouble grouping replaceable-blade heads well. After tuning his bow, the author was able to shoot this game-killing group at 40 yards, cutting off several fletchings in the process. This kind of broadhead accuracy gives the bowhunter the confidence necessary to make solid shots. Take a walk through these tough but tiny heads 1. Rocky Mountain Premium -- 100 grain 2.
