When combined with Broadcom's industry-leading Wi-Fi and VDSL2 chips, the new ADSL+ modem chip offers manufacturers the most advanced, high-performance DSL gateway platform available. Its simple, yet robust single-chip design enables VoIP to be a standard feature on all DSL CPEs, furthering the broad adoption and mass deployment of VoIP services.

 (VIPER) processor architecture. This robust computing architecture enables a wide range of sophisticated features and services that are either unachievable with today's ADSL2+ CPE solutions or require additional processing technologies that are costly to develop and manufacture. Additionally, the VIPER architecture significantly simplifies the development of VoIP solutions and reduces the development costs of DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  programming as well as time-to-market. By reducing the component count on voice over DSL modems, more cost-effective CPE solutions and improved reliability are now achievable.

BCM6358 Technical Information and Applications

The BCM6358 is a highly integrated chip that incorporates an ADSL2+ transcever and analog front-end with Broadcom's VIPER MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second. 32 CPU CPU

PCMCIA created the PC Card. See PC Card.  and mini-PCI. The BCM6358's level of integration, coupled with the processing power of the VIPER architecture and Broadcom companion solutions, supports 802.11a/b/g/n, multi-mode ADSL/VDSL2+ and multi-port 10/100 Fast Ethernet, all of which enable the development of CPEs or integrated access devices (IADs) with advanced levels of connectivity support and performance.

As a result, the BCM6358 is ideally suited for the following applications:

* ADSL2+ IAD (Integrated Access Device) A device that multiplexes a variety of communications technologies in the customer's premises onto a single telephone line for transmission to the carrier. It also demultiplexes the incoming streams into their respective channels.  with multi-channel VoIP * ADSL2+ gateway with VoIP and draft-802.11n * Multi-mode ADSL2+/VDSL2

For ADSL2+ IAD applications with multi-channel VoIP, the BCM6358 provides manufacturers with a single-chip solution for the development of high-speed ADSL2+ modems. For these applications, the BCM6358 supports:

* Downstream data rates up to 29 Mbps and upstream data rates up to 3 Mbps * Up to four lines of VoIP * Embedded USB 2.0, 10/100 Fast Ethernet, serial and mPCI ports support a wide range of connectivity options to personal computers, printers, storage, video devices, Ethernet switches and Bluetooth devices * Channel bonding by configuring two BCM6358s together enables manufacturers to offer modems with two times the speed of today's ADSL2+ modems. For ADSL2+ gateway applications with VoIP and draft-802.11n, the BCM6358, when coupled with Broadcom's Intensi-fi(TM) family of wireless LAN chipsets, provides manufacturers with a complete gateway solution that supports: * High-speed data access, multiple channels of voice and Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the home or office * Compliance with the new IEEE 802.11n draft specification (via Intensi-fi technology) and provides throughput of over 150 Mbps and reliable wireless coverage throughout a home or office * Enables consumers to take advantage of emerging voice, video and music applications, providing an experience similar to wired Fast-Ethernet with the convenience of wireless connectivity.

For multi-mode ADSL2+/VDSL2 applications, the BCM6358, when coupled with Broadcom's BCM6314 VDSL2 transceiver, provides manufacturers with a highly integrated VDSL2 gateway or IAD that enables:

* Seamless fallback fall·back

 to ADSL2+ modes * Host CPU support (via the VIPER architecture) to support VDSL2 at data rates up to 100 Mbps on a single line or 200 Mbps when utilizing channel bonding * Telecommunications service providers to offer a single platform for legacy (data-centric) services as well as "triple-play" (voice, video and data) services given the data rates supported.

"Broadcom's complete silicon and software product offering including the powerful new BCM6358 along with their Intensi-fi pre/draft 802.11n solutions have helped reinforce NETGEAR's leadership position in the DSL market space," said David James, NETGEAR's director of Product Management.

"The integration and performance of the BCM6358 have enabled us to develop powerful gateways, supporting Wi-Fi, DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) A cordless phone standard mostly used in Europe; however, DECT 6.0 is increasingly used worldwide. The first DECT standards were introduced by ETSI in 1992, and DECT phones have been used as cordless home phones as  and VoIP, which are future proofed for the delivery of broadband services," said Romain Waller, Triple Play general manager with Thomson Telecom.

"The BCM6358, with its VIPER CPU and rich peripheral set, has enabled Comtrend to address the highly advanced and service rich ADSL2+ channel bonding and VDSL2 and ADSL2+ gateway markets with unparalleled performance," said Andrew Morton, general manager Americas for Comtrend.

Price and Availability

The BCM6358 is available in production-level quantities. The chip is housed in a 21mm FPBGA FPBGA Fine Pitch Ball Grid Array . Pricing is available upon request.
