BROADCOM'S SILICON TUNER GETS EURODOCSIS CERTIFICATION.Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq:BRCM), Irvine, Calif. a provider of integrated circuits enabling broadband communications, has announced that its BCM3415 chip became the world's first silicon tuner to pass the EuroDOCSIS(TM) certification process, a significant milestone in dramatically improving the component count, cost, and reliability of the tuner function in cable modems. The Broadcom(R) BCM3415 silicon tuner and BCM3350 single-chip cable modem passed EuroDOCSIS certification in a D-Link Corporation external cable modem. Broadcom's highly integrated CMOS tuner chip replaces up to 200 discrete components traditionally housed in a bulky tuner can. The BCM3415 is the only silicon tuner in the industry to be certified as EuroDOCSIS-compliant, as well as the industry's only silicon tuner certified as DOCSIS-compliant. The EuroDOCSIS certification is a significant achievement for Broadcom. European cable operators have a 33% wider downstream channel (8MHz vs. US 6MHz). EuroDOCSIS therefore utilizes higher symbol rates, which demand higher performance from the tuner as well as the downstream demodulator. "Having D-Link's external cable modem achieve tComLab's certification using our silicon tuner is a tremendous accomplishment," said Tim Lindenfelser, Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Broadband Communications Business Unit. "EuroDOCSIS certification sends a strong message to manufacturers that our CMOS tuner meets the reliability and quality standards we have all come to expect in cable modems. We can now offer our customers a production-ready, entirely CMOS cable modem silicon platform that meets the rigorous certification process set forth by tComLabs, as well as the North American CableLabs specifications." The BCM3415 supports up to 256-QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation), and also supports an intermediate frequency (IF) output range of 36-44 MHz, sufficient for both the North American NTSC and European PAL standards. Because Broadcom's new tuner supports both EuroDOCSIS and North American DOCSIS standards, manufacturers and European cable operators can gain tremendous economies of scale and time to market advantages by leveraging off the North American DOCSIS development and product features. Offering the most widely used silicon technology for cable modems, Broadcom's chips have successfully completed the CableLabs and EuroDOCSIS certification processes in over 100 customer cable modem designs. "Having worked with Broadcom's industry-leading enterprise networking chips for many years, we were confident in the superior technical quality of their products and the engineering support we would find," said Sam Liang, President, D-Link Corporation. "Being the first to complete the EuroDOCSIS certification process, with Broadcom's breakthrough technology, is a significant step for the cable industry and demonstrates D-Link's commitment to adopting advanced cable modem solutions that result in the best possible price/performance for our customers." The BCM3415 was specifically designed to complement Broadcom's highly integrated BCM3350, which is a single-chip cable modem solution that has been certified in PCI, Ethernet and Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable modem products. The BCM3415 tuner is available today and is priced below $4.00 in high-volume quantities.
