Both events are limited to invited guests, but the Blair visit -- the first ever to California by a sitting British prime minister -- is causing a stir among Anglophiles.

``It was an immediate sellout for us,'' said Lincoln Hubbard, spokesman for the World Affairs Council, which has an open invitation to heads of state to address its members.

Hubbard said the 1,800-2,000 tickets for Blair's luncheon address at the Bonaventure Hotel were gone almost as soon as they were announced.

The tickets are priced at $80 a person to cover the cost of the event.

``We are pleased with the response and that we are able to provide a venue,'' Hubbard said.

The mayor's reception for Blair is being held at the Getty Villa on a night the museum is normally closed.

The cost of the event is being picked up by private donors, officials said, with invitations limited to some of the city's top business and civic leaders as well as representatives from British firms doing business in Los Angeles.

Officials said Wednesday that they were still dealing with attendance requests.

For Blair, the trip to California is also connected to trade.

``The reason is that it is the sixth- or seventh-largest economy in the world ... which is similar to ours in that it is a new economy increasingly based on heavy knowledge-based industries,'' according to a statement on Blair's Web site.
