BRITAIN: Four held as stolen pounds 15m Da Vinci is found.


FOUR men have been arrested following the recovery of a stolen Leonardo da Vinci Leonardo da Vinci (də vĭn`chē, Ital. lāōnär`dō dä vēn`chē), 1452–1519, Italian painter, sculptor, architect, musician, engineer, and scientist, b. near Vinci, a hill village in Tuscany.  painting worth more than pounds i5m, police said last night.

The Madonna With The Yarnwinder was stolen by thieves posing as tourists from a stately home in Dumfries and Galloway in August 2003.

The work was taken from Drumlanrig Castle and belonged to the Duke of Buccleuch.

It was recovered following a major police operation in the Glasgow area.

Three men from the Lancashire area and one man from Glasgow had been arrested, police said.

Detective Chief Inspector Mickey Dalgleish, from Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary is the police force for the council area of Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland.

The police force was formed in 1948 as an amalgamation of the previous police forces for Dumfriesshire, the Stewarty of Kirkcudbright and Wigtownshire, and
, said: "We are extremely pleased to recover the Madonna Of The Yarnwinder The Madonna of the Yarnwinder (c. 1501) is the subject of several oil paintings after a lost original by Leonardo da Vinci. They depict the Virgin Mary with the Christ child, who looks longingly at a yarnwinder which the Virgin could use to measure off yarn.  painting.

"Through careful investigations and intelligence-led police work we were able to locate the painting and make four arrests.

"I would like to thank all staff involved in this investigation, partner police forces and agencies as well as members of the public for supplying crucial information."

The masterpiece, which experts believe was painted between 1500 and 1510, depicts the Madonna with the infant Jesus holding a cross-shaped yarnwinder.

It was stolen as two men overpowered a female member of staff and grabbed the artwork off the wall.

The suspects escaped in a car which was later found abandoned.
