``Growing up, we were 818 (area code); the perception was it was not as hip, not as Hollywood,'' remembers Julia, 33, a former social worker. ``But it was a hometowny place ... people were accepted for who they were.''

``In L.A., there are more places to linger, (but) in New York, boutiques are too small,'' says Nina, 30, a former comedy writer and performer. ``We have more of a living room vibe ... so, when shoppers bring their boyfriends, they can sit and read a magazine ... or get a snack while they wait.''

The boutique was inspired by Valley studios the girls visited with their music-producer father. The ``sexy, sleek, but plush quality'' of the studios was something they tried to infuse inĀ·fuse

With Nina overseeing the apparel side of the business (carrying such California designers as Mike & Chris, Anzevino & Florence, and Ladies of the Canyon) and Julia the beauty (employing Japanese nail technicians for intricate designing and providing a rare new Brazilian hard wax treatment), they take on the challenging task of blending California style into a uniquely stylish New York City New York City: see New York, city.

But Nina insists it is that uniqueness that allows for a place like Valley to succeed. ``Individualism is celebrated (in New York),'' adds Julia.

Their clientele ranges from international visitors to out-of-state transplants to native New Yorkers.

The response? ``Overwhelmingly great,'' says Nina.

For those heading east from L.A. for the holidays, Valley, located at 48 Orchard St., will have just enough options and Southern California-charm to keep you warm and feeling at home through the cold New York winter.
