Here's a look at the leagues and what should be expected this fall:

FOOTHILL

There has not been a repeat champion in the Foothill League for the past eight seasons, but Saugus aims to end that streak.

The Centurions return nine seniors and a front line with an average height of 5-foot-10, led by seniors Julia Bradley (6-0) at outside hitter and Lisa Sonnenblick (5-10) at middle blocker.

Saugus lost talented setter setter: see sporting dog.

``(Gillis) hits better than she sets, so it's hard to make her the full-time setter,'' coach Bobbie Estes said. ``Sara probably has better hands.''

Senior Casey Riedel gives the Centurions a strong hitter on the left side, and the only worry is the health of middle blocker Jenny Haywood, who suffered a shoulder injury in the summer but should return at full strength.

``I think we'll probably win league, but Valencia brings back a very strong team, as well,'' Estes said. ``We want to make some pretty sizable siz·a·ble also size·a·ble

Valencia coach Ray Sanchez concedes Saugus should be the preseason favorite, but he's also excited about his team's chances.

The Vikings appear to be just as deep as Saugus. Diva Kakonde, a 6-foot middle blocker, could be the league's dominant hitter, but the Vikings are exceedingly ex·ceed·ing·ly

Valencia starts 5-10 senior Janelle Watterson at outside hitter and is so tall that 5-8 senior Ashley Carter will be the team's defensive specialist.

The only unresolved position is setter, but the Vikings seem to have two strong options.

``Tayrn is probably a better pure setter than Ashley, but she's young,'' Sanchez said. ``She's phenomenal, though. We're just trying to get her as much playing time as we can. We might put her at right side a little, just to get her in the game.

``She wears a size 11 1/2 shoe, and the doctor said she would probably grow to about 6-1.''

Heather Seddon quit the team to focus on academics, coach Dave Gutierrez said, but the Cowboys should be strong enough to make the playoffs.

That leaves Hart of Newhall, a perennial question mark since the Indians are on their fifth coach in five seasons.

Now it's Mark Cruz's turn to lead Hart, and he inherits an experienced team that lacks height.

Emily Steckel and Ashley Lawler return to provide some senior leadership at outside hitter, but the Indians will have to break in a new setter, either junior Kristen Gorman or junior Shannon Slatter.

GOLDEN

The challenge doesn't seem to be there. Highland of Palmdale is breaking in a new coach and Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The Antelope Valley
, Littlerock and Palmdale, although potentially on the rise, don't seem to have the talent to challenge for the league title this season.

Yet Quartz Hill coach Larry Vocke said he is worried.

The Rebels seem to be solid favorites to defend their league title, and they have one of the region's most dominant players in middle blocker Kristen Voysen, but Vocke's anxiety is caused by setting.

Natalie Coe comes from a family of volleyball standouts, but she separated her shoulder during the club season.

``She's doing well, but the biggest problem right now is that the shoulder still gets weak during practice and we have to sit her down and rest it,'' Vocke said. ``It's a concern, but hopefully it won't be a long-lasting problem.''

The presence of Voyson, a 6-2 middle blocker headed to Long Beach State, will make up for a lot, as will 6-3 Alexis Crimes, a junior in her first season in the program.

``It's a nice blend of experience and newcomers,'' Vocke said.

The team on the rise could be Palmdale, which has the skill to make the playoffs in coach Colleen Nua's second season.

The Falcons have a solid senior leader in setter Joyce Bautista, as well as senior outside hitter Jennie Nua.

Palmdale's season could be made or broken by the play of sophomore middle blockers Lisa Leggett and Helianna Plascentia.

The biggest question is Highland, which dominated the league for the better part of the decade but now has its third coach in four seasons and lost its top player, Brooke Truong, to Van Nuys.

Coach Rick Phillips was hired last month and hasn't had much time to assess his team's strengths and weaknesses, but the Bulldogs will rely on junior setter Brianne Goudey and junior middle blocker Angie Mitchell.

The Bulldogs should be in good position to make the playoffs but will need to learn fast.

``We didn't get to play in any summer leagues, so I don't really know what we're facing,'' Phillips said. ``We've done so much scrimmaging, passing and passing, but we need to play some games.''

There's also some anticipation at Antelope Valley, which will have two strong middle blockers in Summa sum·ma

MARMONTE

It's been the curse of Westlake in recent years that the Warriors advance deep in the playoffs but stop short of a championship.

This could be the year the Warriors make an impact, as they are the clear favorites in the league.

Coach Doug Magorien arrived before last season and continued Westlake's recent success and put them a notch above longtime long·time

Westlake has two returning starters, but middle blocker Jessica Harper and outside hitter Jen Schlinz were two of the league's top players last season.

Smith started last season on the varsity but returned to JV to get some experience.

``We weren't going to play her all the time, and the JV had a need for her, so she got some experience,'' Magorien said.

For now, Royal will depend on returning hitters Lindsay Kelly, Dyana Thompson, Jennifer Atkins and Nicole Grover.

``They all saw significant playing time throughout the year last year,'' Ferguson said. ``We've got some good leadership from older girls, and that's always good when you've got a young group.''

Royal will start at least one sophomore, with Andi Ramirez and Shannon Finley getting chances to contribute.

Simi Valley inherits former Alemany of Mission Hills coach Peter Piexoto and has a strong senior leader in setter Samantha Sullivan.

``Her play will cover up a lot of mistakes,'' Piexoto said.

Junior outside hitters Alison Schaffer and Sandy Varnese will carry the hitting load for the Pioneers.

Thousand Oaks has a solid lineup led by outside hitter Brynn Porter, outside hitters Jen Bucher and Jayne Markle.

MISSION

Courtney Schultz, Karalyn Kuchenbecker and Terbrie Taylor have graduated, and Harvard-Westlake of Studio City is left to pick up the pieces.

The Wolverines, winners of two consecutive state championships, have a ton of hitting strength and experience to replace but have a solid leader in setter Alex Dunphy.

Dunphy, daughter of Pepperdine men's coach Marv Dunphy, is such a strong hitter that coach Jess jesse, jess

That makes it important for the Wolverines' other hitters to step up, so opponents cannot just focus on stopping Dunphy.

The Wolverines have solid talent in hitters Kristin Quinn, Frannie Felder, Devon O'Fallon and Justine Davidson, and two strong defensive specialists in Julia Bruno and Jessica Fine.

``Justine is getting stronger, and she's added a shot or two to her shot selection,'' Quiroz said.

``This year we know people are going to be coming after us, but I still think we're going to shock a lot of people.''

The main team gunning for Harvard-Westlake will be Flintridge-Sacred Heart of La Canada, which returns perhaps the region's best outside hitter in Jillian Davis and a top setter in Kacey Knauf.

``We're very excited,'' coach Nancy Tinkham said. ``We definitely think this could be our year.''

The Tologs lost a lot with the graduation of middle blocker Kerry O'Keefe, but will make up for that with some depth at hitter, including seniors Brittany Esser and Kim Heller in the middle.

Borth is excited about junior Madison Randall, senior Jocelyn Sierod and sophomores Kate Denniston and Nicole Cassel.

``(Randall) makes smart plays,'' Borth said, ``and when she finally figures out that she's a pretty decent player, she's going to be special. Every once in a while you just have to close your eyes and hit the ball hard.

``(Denniston) got some club experience and she's going to be a top recruit pretty soon. She would be an average-sized middle in college, but if she can pass well she could be a great outside hitter.''

Dan Rizzo, a former assistant at Royal, takes over at Alemany.

``When a team comes to play Royal, Royal has that mental edge, and that's what I'm trying to establish here,'' Rizzo said.

Glendale, with senior middle blocker Christine Jones and junior middle blocker Simone Jones, will present a challenge, along with an always-strong Arcadia.

Crescenta Valley has one returning starter in senior outside hitter Kristen Camero but plenty of depth throughout the lineup.

Senior setter Cody Brinton steps into a starting spot this season after backing up last year, and senior opposite hitter Lili Sanchez and sophomore middle blocker Rachel Gagliardi also will contribute.

``We definitely have some youth,'' coach Jennifer Kunz said, ``but they are competitive and I hope to get some leadership.

``This will be one of the tallest teams we've ever put on the floor,'' said coach Don Hyatt, who won a Southern Section championship two seasons ago.

The new star from La Reina could be 5-9 sophomore Haley Fithian, who should fit nicely into the Regents' 6-2 offense alongside senior Katie Kellogg, a fourth-year varsity player.

``We have great flexibility and can make adjustments if needed,'' Hyatt said.

Last season's second middle blocker, Carolyn Diacos, will become the team's leading hitter with the graduation of Sara Toon and Cara Kuebert.

Erica O'Connor gives the Regents hitting depth, and Hyatt hopes he has filled the last hole with the addition of junior Emily Robbins into the lineup as the second middle blocker.

``Her timing off the block is outstanding,'' Hyatt said. ``We're very pleasantly surprised.''

Grace Brethren, a Southern Section quarterfinalist last season, returns eight players from last season's team, and all eight played club volleyball in the offseason.

Grace Brethren moves to the Alpha League and will be led by 6-foot junior Ashley Farrer, who converted from middle blocker to left-side hitter during the club season.

Senior setter Stevee Mashburn runs the offense and the team will get strong hitting from outside Jenny Steinwender and sophomore middle blocker Chrissa Trinidade.
