BRIGNAC SEEKS A NEW TAG: 3-TIME CHAMP.

Brignac has worn a bone-shaped tag with the name ``Skillz'' on it as a good-luck charm throughout her high school career. The tag belonged to Brignac's first dog, a five-month old Rotweiller puppy puppy

 also fits Brignac.

She leads the section in her specialty at 5 feet, 8 inches and is favored to win her third consecutive City title tonight at Birmingham High.

She's also a contender in the long jump and triple jump after picking up the events this season to score points in dual meets.

Brignac, who attended Cleveland as a freshman and sophomore, lost her desire for track last season. At Taft, she planned to try softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  instead this spring. But the decision was short-lived as she has rediscovered her affinity for track with the addition of the horizontal jumps.

``I always wanted to be a field-event person,'' she said. ``I have so much confidence because I just go out there and jump. It is something fun and new.''

The contributions of Brignac, who will also run in the 1,600-meter relay, will be pivotal in the Toreadors' bid for a third consecutive City title over West Valley League champion Birmingham.

Taft should also get points from seniors Deneeka Torrey and Erin Reed.

Torrey won the 100-meter high hurdles and 300 low hurdles and finished second in the 100 in the 1999 City championships. Reed, third in the 100 and 200 in last year's finals, was the top qualifier qual·i·fi·er

Vincetta, a freshman who has qualified in the 100 and 200, and Gigi, a senior who will attend Cal State Fullerton, were third in the 400 and fifth in the 200, respectively, at last year's City championships.

The Taft boys are heavy favorites to win their first City title since 1987 behind seniors Fred Williams Frederick Ronald (Fred) Williams is an is an Australian painter and printmaker.

 and Daniel Clements.

Williams, who did not run last season, has the section's best marks in the 100 (10.68) and 200 (21.13). Morgan, the state leader in the 110 high hurdles at 13.94 and defending long jump champion, should place well in the 300 intermediate hurdles and 100.

Lopez is the defending high jump champion, and Clements is a contender in the 1,600 and 3,200 for the Toreadors, who have athletes in 12 of 15 events.
