At Hamilton Sheriff Court yesterday, Allan was ordered to perform 240 hours of community service.

Sheriff Marie Smart said she had taken into account the fact that Barry accepted that Allan had not meant to harm him.

After the sentencing, Barry, 19, of Bellshill, Lanarkshire, relived the moment he burst into flames at the tyre dealership where he works.

He said: "We had been having a bit of a laugh late in the afternoon when Stephen started messing about with the cleaning fluid. I told him to give it a rest because I knew it was very dangerous. But he kept on sparking the lighter.

"A car had come into the workshop but as I turned to look at it, Stephen sparked the lighter again and the next thing I knew, I was on fire.

"I was in utter agony. Some of the guys grabbed a hold of me and managed to get the flames out and tried giving me first aid.

"The skin was dripping off my hand and I went into total shock.

"The victim has said that he didn't think you intended to hurt him."
