BRIGHT IDEAS; TAKE A REMODELING LESSON ON SHOWCASE-HOME TOUR.Byline: Catherine Gaugh Don't you love home tours? People you've never met invite you in to wander around, look at all their stuff, make comments - and steal ideas for your own house. Owners of four homes have been gracious enough to let you do just that on Sunday as part of the 1998 Showcase of Kitchens and Interiors tour, sponsored by the American Society of Interior Designers The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is the oldest and largest professional association for interior designers. Through education, knowledge sharing, advocacy, community building and outreach, the Society strives to advance the interior design profession and, in the , Pasadena/Glendale chapter. Each home on the tour has a distinct style and personality. There are color, light and texture contrasts and a variety of solutions to design problems. Here are a few ideas plucked pluck v. plucked, pluck·ing, plucks v.tr. 1. Steal a few: Smart kitchen: Everyone could use a smart kitchen. Start by converting those wasteful narrow and deep cabinet spaces into handy, pull-out shelves for easy access to everything from spices to pots and pans. And the more cabinets you have, the more customizing opportunities. Interior designer Robin Dorman installed several special shelves for spices and cookie sheets in the Spanish villa in La Canada Flintridge. These shelves should be standard equipment in kitchens. A note: This house is undergoing a major renovation, and the kitchen has many lovely touches, including the Amber Fantasy granite countertops with matching trivet squares. Garden room: A room with an abundance of windows invites an open, cheery cheer·y adj. cheer·i·er, cheer·i·est Showing or suggesting good spirits; cheerful: a cheery hello. cheer treatment. Wicker furniture with palm-tree fabric cushions and a variety of indoor plants transform the sitting room of the English Tudor house in Pasadena into a garden room. One of the nicer touches you can't see is that these chairs have inner springs, so they're comfortable. Designer John Fremdling redecorated this pleasant home, and there are lots of good ideas here. An added treat is landscape designer Blair Haines' English country garden. Stained glass stained glass, in general, windows made of colored glass. To a large extent, the name is a misnomer, for staining is only one of the methods of coloring employed, and the best medieval glass made little use of it. : Whoever heard of stained glass on the inside? Interior designer Joan Moseley placed stained glass panels on the second-floor bedroom doors in her Pasadena Craftsman home. The doors connect the interior hallway to the bedrooms. The effect is wonderful: The hallway light glows through the stained glass, casting soft color inside the bedrooms. And the sunlight from the bedroom windows filters through the glass to the hallway. Lighten up Lighten up Selling some part of a stock or bond position in a portfolio to realize capital gains or to losses or increase cash assets. lighten up : With wall-to-ceiling wood shelves, packed with books and collectibles, our first thought is that such a room would be too dark for reading. But the office/study in the English Tudor home in Pasadena is warm and bright from the recessed ceiling lights. With this lighting technique, there is no reason to be afraid of the dark. Details, details: A touch of art and nature nestles within the smooth surface of the Batchelder-type tile in Joan Moseley's Craftsman house kitchen. The carved stone tile of trees satisfies the eyes and is pleasantly cool to the touch. It reminds Moseley of the outdoors, where she likes to spend most of her free time (she's a fly-fishing pro). What image would please you, in your own kitchen? Bright color: Yellow is warmth and sunshine, and many a kitchen has been made cheerful when done in this color. The yellow in the English Tudor house kitchen seems warmer as it surrounds the white Formica cabinets and tile counters. Fremdling wanted a sunny Italian mood within the minimalist min·i·mal·ist n. 1. He added lattice, color and lighting to what had been a plain, open-beam ceiling and then installed a skylight skylight Roof opening covered with translucent or transparent glass or plastic designed to admit daylight. The cages along the cabinet tops suggest sweet bird songs. It's the perfect accompaniment for that morning cup of coffee or tea. THE FACTS The show: The 1998 Showcase of Kitchens and Interiors.
