Grandma killer gets 25-to-life

LANCASTER -- A Lake Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  man was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years to life in prison for murdering his 78-year-old grandmother because he feared she would report he violated his probation.

Leonel Moncada, 26, was found guilty last month of first-degree murder in the May 2004 slaying of Elvira Diaz. Moncada had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity not guilty by reason of insanity n. plea in court of a person charged with a crime who admits the criminal act, but whose attorney claims he/she was so mentally disturbed at the time of the crime that he/she lacked the capacity to have intended to commit a crime. , but the jury found him to be legally sane sane (san) sound in mind.

Grant to help prevent crime

 approved the supplemental Juvenile Justice Crime Prevention Act funds Tuesday.

The grant will fund the expansion of Probation Department services and youth crime prevention programs such as the District Attorney's Office's Abolish Chronic Truancy program, 5th District Supervisor Michael D.
