Florence native son

gets Oscar consideration

"Johnny Flynton," a short film produced by former Florence resident Christopher Mans, has been nominated for an Academy Award.

The short subject, which tells the story of a shy boxer from a small town in the deep South, is one of five nominees in the category of live action short film.

Mans is a 1988 graduate of Siuslaw High School who now lives in Portland with his family. A 1993 University of Oregon graduate, he studied film production and literature before starting a career in filmmaking.

His credits include production work on the 1997 feature "The Others" and on "Clowns," named `best unsigned indie' of 2001 by Ain't It Cool News.
