BRIEFLY.Three stabbed in two incidents Three people were stabbed in two separate incidents Wednesday, authorities said. In Van Nuys, a woman and a man were gravely injured after the man allegedly stabbed the woman and then himself, police said. The stabbings, believed to be the result of a domestic dispute, occurred about 6:13 p.m. in the 7200 block of Allott Avenue, said Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Dave Cueto. The woman was stabbed in the back and the man in the neck, Cueto said. Both were taken to a local hospital. Their names were not immediately available. Earlier in Northridge, a man who appeared to be in his early 20s was taken to a local hospital with a stab wound, said Brian Humphrey, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman. The man was discovered about 6:16 a.m. in the 19300 block of Business Center Drive, Humphrey said. No other details were available. -- Daily News One-way streets may not work A proposal to turn Olympic and Pico boulevards into one-way streets between downtown Los Angeles and Santa Monica may not be feasible, a City Council committee was told Wednesday. Earlier this year, county Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky proposed making Pico Boulevard westbound and Olympic eastbound in an effort to ease congestion. A report from consultant Allyn Rifkin concluded that traffic capacity would improve 20.5 percent by creating five one-way lanes and two "contra-flow" lanes on Olympic and Pico. An estimated 100,000 cars travel on Olympic and Pico every day, where the average morning speed is 21 mph and just 19 mph during the evening rush hour. But a study by the city Department of Transportation found the plan is not feasible in the city of Santa Monica, because of a landscaped median along Olympic. It would also not be practicable east of Crenshaw Boulevard, where Pico is too narrow for more than five lanes of traffic. The city Transportation Committee asked DOT officials to report back in 90 days with an analysis of alternatives to the one-way proposal. -- City News Service Cop fires his gun during potty stop A Los Angeles police officer was found to have negligently discharged his service pistol while using the restroom at the Northeast Division station, according to a report obtained Wednesday. As punishment, the officer -- whose name was not immediately revealed -- received a written reprimand and was ordered to undergo formal firearms training, according to police Chief William Bratton's report, obtained by City News Service under a California Public Records Act request. The Los Angeles Police Commission signed off on Bratton's recommendation after a closed-door discussion Tuesday. -- City News Service Witness: Death was likely suicide Actress Lana Clarkson's death was likely a spur-of-the-moment suicide, brought on in part by the alcohol and medication in her system, a forensic pathologist testified Wednesday in the murder trial of music producer Phil Spector. Spector, 67, is accused of fatally shooting the 40-year-old Clarkson, who also was a House of Blues VIP hostess, in the foyer of his "Pyrenees Castle" during the early morning of Feb. 3, 2003. He maintains she committed suicide. Werner Spitz, former chief medical examiner in Wayne County, Mich., said he based his opinion on his review of the autopsy reports and photos, along with the testimony of people who knew Clarkson. -- City News Service |
