BRIEFLY.Presidents Day events at library SIMI VALLEY -- A free Presidents Day celebration will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, featuring music, presidential look-alikes, storytelling, a flyover by military jets, creative activities for children and visits with Ventura County Sheriff's Department police dogs. Hot dogs, cherry pie and other all-American foods will be available for purchase. Although most of the Presidents Day activities are free, regular fees apply to visit the museum and the Air Force One Pavilion. The library is at 40 Presidential Drive in Simi Valley. For more information, call (800) 410-8354. -- Daily News Whale Festival set for March 11 POINT MUGU -- The 11th annual Point Mugu State Park Whale Festival will be held March 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sycamore Cove. The event in celebration of the annual gray whale migration will include musical entertainment, arts and crafts arts and crafts, term for that general field of applied design in which hand fabrication is dominant. The term was coined in England in the late 19th cent. as a label for the then-current movement directed toward the revivifying of the decorative arts. The chief influence behind this movement was William Morris. By the mid-19th cent. for children and whale-watching stations. The Ventura County Maritime Museum, Heal the Bay and the ORCA marine life rescue group will have information booths. Although the festival is free, there is a $10 parking fee at the state park, located five miles north of the Ventura/Los Angeles county line on Pacific Coast Highway. -- Daily News Response Team sign-ups begin SIMI VALLEY -- The city's office of emergency services is accepting applications for its Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training program. The program was first offered following the Northridge Earthquake in 1994 and provides citizens with training in disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations, search and rescue, disaster psychology and team leadership. Participants are required to attend seven classes with training offered by the Ventura County Fire Department in conjunction with the city. The first meeting will begin at 7 p.m. March 28 in the Simi Valley Police Department's Emergency Operation Center at 3901 Alamo St. The next five meetings are set for 7-10 p.m. the following Wednesday evenings through May 2. The final meeting is May 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Ventura County Regional Fire Training Center in Camarillo. People 18 years or older who live or work in Simi Valley can apply, with applications available at the Simi Valley Police Department and online at www.simivalley.org. The applications will be accepted until March 23. -- Daily News Senior Center to host arts fair SIMI VALLEY -- Unique items that senior citizens have crafted will be on sale at the city's Spring Arts and Crafts Fair scheduled for March 30-31 at the Simi Valley Senior Center. On March 31, the event will be held in conjunction with a Simi Valley Council on Aging baked goods and rummage sale and a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Council on Aging and the Noontime Rotary Club of Simi Valley. The arts and crafts fair will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both Friday and Saturday at the senior center, 3900 Avenida Simi. The pancake breakfast, which costs $4, will be held from 8 to 11 a.m., with proceeds benefiting the Meals on Wheels Program, which provides meals to homebound seniors.
