BRIEFLY.Byline: The Register-Guard Town hall on rail yard pollution set for Tuesday Eugene residents who live along the Union Pacific railroad tracks are invited by the Oregon Toxics Alliance to a town hall meeting about rail yard pollution. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Red Cross Building, 861 Bethel Drive. The environmental group plans to present information about the human health risks involved in exposure to pollutants along the tracks and in adjacent neighborhoods. Group leaders will describe what they believe are shortcomings in the state Department of Environmental Quality's investigations of the site. Spanish translation will be provided. Latino Business Network to host steakhouse owner Rodeo Steakhouse & Grill owner Nelson Rosales will be the featured speaker at the Tuesday meeting of the Latino Business Network. The meeting runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Town Club of Eugene, 975 Oak St., Suite 900. The cost is $8, and $6 for Eugene Chamber of Commerce members. Mental illness group to hold meeting on commitment The Lane County National Alliance on Mental Illness is sponsoring a community program Tuesday on commitment procedures. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at Lane County Mental Health, 2411 Martin Luther King Blvd., Room 198. Guest speakers Ivan Sumner and Lucy Kingsley will discuss the current legal and medical procedures on voluntary and involuntary commitment for those affected by mental illness. The program is free and open to the public. John Elsley to give gardening lecture for plant group The Willamette Valley Hardy Plant Group will present the first of its fall series of lectures and gardening clinics at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Agate Hall, East 18th Avenue and Agate Street. The speaker will be John Elsley, the former director of horticulture at Wayside Gardens. His lecture will center on shrubs and trees and the recent introduction of plants that have outstanding performance for the local landscape. Admission is $3 for members and $6 for non-members.
