Blood drives set for Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  

SIMI VALLEY -- Blood drives are scheduled for next weekend to replenish supplies in Ventura and Santa Barbara Santa Barbara (săn'tə bär`brə, –bərə), city (1990 pop. 85,571), seat of Santa Barbara co., S Calif., on the Pacific Ocean; inc. 1850.  counties, with Types O and A in especially high demand.

The drives will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 1855 Cochran St., and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 3 at 2902 Tapo Canyon Road.

Alito to speak at Reagan Library

SIMI VALLEY -- U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito Samuel Anthony Alito, Jr. (born April 1, 1950) is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Educated at Princeton University and Yale Law School, Alito served as a United States attorney and a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit  will speak at 6 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library Coordinates:

Sept. 30 deadline for photo contest

THOUSAND OAKS Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown.  -- Entries can be submitted between Sept. 1 and Sept. 30 for the Spirit of the Mountains photo contest, sponsored by the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area: see National Parks and Monuments (table). .

Categories include plants, scenic shots, young photographers, people in parklands and ``elements of change'' having to do with earth, wind, fire and water.

Young photographers 12 and under can submit up to four entries in their own category.

Holiday weekend crackdown on tap

SIMI VALLEY -- The Police Department plans to deploy additional officers over the three-day Labor Day Labor Day, holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada on the first Monday in September to honor the laborer. It was inaugurated by the Knights of Labor in 1882 and made a national holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1894.  holiday as part of a crackdown on drunk driving.

Backbone Trail event scheduled

AGOURA HILLS -- The Great Backbone Trail Get Together Celebration, hosted by the National Park Service, will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 9 at Peter Strauss Ranch The Peter Strauss Ranch is a unit of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area operated by the National Park Service in the Santa Monica Mountains near Agoura Hills, California in the United States. , Mulholland Highway at Troutdale Drive.

Activities include discussions with hikers, showing of personal trail photographs, sharing information on horseback riding in the area, and presentations of information on the best ways to hike and camp along the Backbone Trail through the mountains.

The National Park Service will take sign-ups for Backbone Trail hikes.
