Health officials warn about West Nile virus West Nile virus, microorganism and the infection resulting from it, which typically produces no symptoms or a flulike condition. The virus is a flavivirus and is related to a number of viruses that cause encephalitis.  

Lane County Public Health officials are reminding people to take precautions to reduce the risk of West Nile virus, following confirmation of the first human cases in Oregon.

The Oregon State Public Health Laboratory has confirmed that three people in Malheur County have tested positive for West Nile virus infection. They are the year's first human West Nile virus cases.

Salem-Keizer district cuts soda and candy

SALEM - Soda and sugary candy will be absent when school resumes next month in the Salem-Keizer district.

The school board voted Tuesday for a nutrition policy that allows soda only at sports events and activities, when concessions stands can sell it.

In place of soda in school vending machines will be beverages such as water and juice.

Members of a citizen task force that helped develop the policy cheered the decision.

MAUPIN - An Arizona man died in a rafting accident on the Deschutes River, the fourth person to drown in the river this summer, sheriff's deputies said.

David Layman, 27, of Phoenix was among four people in a raft that hit a rock near Wapinitia Rapids on Tuesday, said Wasco County Detective Sgt. Terry Scattergood.

All four people went into the water, Scattergood said. Other rafters got Layman out of the water but could not revive him, he said.
